OLLU community invited to groundbreaking ceremony for new residence hall Thursday
The OLLU community is invited to the groundbreaking ceremony for the new residence hall, Thursday at 12:30 p.m. between Flores and Centennial Halls (note location change).
During the ceremony, the community will bless the new space that many OLLU students will call home beginning in August. There will also be a special blessing for the Residence Life staff and for those working on the construction of the new building.
Refreshments will be served following the ceremony.
Social Justice Reading Series will feature author Elizabeth Harris
OLLU’s MA/MFA program in Literature, Creative Writing and Social Justice welcomes author Elizabeth Harris as part of the “Social Justice Reading Series,” Wednesday, at 7 p.m., in Library Community Room.
Winner of the 2014 Gival Press Fiction Award for her short novel, “Mayhem: Three Lives of a Woman,” Harris is a native Texan who grew up in Ft. Worth. She won the John Simmons Prize, awarded by University of Iowa Press, for her first book “The Ant Generator,” a collection of stories praised for their “sense of wonder and comedy” and “acid-etched existentialism.”
Those and uncollected stories have appeared in, “Antioch Review,” “Epoch,” “Chicago Review,” “North American Review,” “Shenandoah,” and other magazines, and have been anthologized in “New Stories from the South,” “Best of Wind,” “The Iowa Award,” and “Literary Austin.”
The reading is free and open to the public.
Quarterly Compliance Q&A
The OLLU community is invited to join OLLU Compliance Officer Suzanne Patrick for a question-and-answer session, Wednesday from 2-3 p.m. in Moye Hall, Room 305. During this time, Patrick will answer questions on topics such as Title IX, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and others.

OLLU hosting CORE4 STEM Family Day
OLLU is collaborating with the San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce to host the CORE4 STEM Family Day, Nov. 5, from 8:30 a.m.-1 p.m.
The CORE4 STEM program is a celebration of education and career opportunities in the STEM fields (science, technology, engineering and mathematics). Attendees will learn more about education and careers in STEM from OLLU professors through several interactive sessions.

Services to Students with Disabilities recruiting students for accessibility study
The Services to Students with Disabilities (SSD) office is recruiting students to participate in Project 31. Project 31 is a two-year research study that will investigate the gap between students with disabilities and their peers who do not have disabilities.
The study seeks to improve the retention and graduation rates of students with disabilities, expand access to digital content for students with disabilities and develop new innovative solutions.
The study is sponsored by Georgia Institute of Technology’s Center for Accessible Materials Innovation (CAMI), which is funded through a first-ever grant from the U.S. Department of Education.
OLLU students are eligible to participate if they meet the following requirements:
- Identify as an ethnic and/or racial minority
- Are currently enrolled as a freshman or sophomore at OLLU
- Have a condition—blindness, visual impairment, acquired brain injury, a learning disability, ADHD, or a physical disability—that may qualify them for electronic textbooks in accessible formats
Students who participate will receive free accessible eBook reader software, up to 10 digital textbooks per semester or quarter and up to $375.

2016 United Way campaign begins today
Every year, OLLU participates in the United Way campaign. Money raised by the campaign will help provide support for children, families and individuals across San Antonio and Bexar County. Last year, OLLU contributed more than $8,000, which represented a 34 percent employee participation rate. The goal for 2016 is to increase support to help more members of the community.
Pledge forms will be distributed to all employees. All forms should be returned to Amelia Guzman, assistant to the vice president for Student Life, in Providence Hall, Room 104. The campaign ends Nov. 30, 2016.
Sister Nagy presents on Alamo’s Japanese monument
Sister Margit Nagy, CDP, PhD, presented the peer-reviewed paper, “Dr. Shiga Shigetaka: Donor of the Alamo’s Japanese Monument as Geopolitical Environmentalist,” at the 45th annual meeting of the Southwest Conference on Asian Studies, Oct. 14-15, 2016. Conference participants were from Asia and throughout the United States.
