Men’s cross-country wins non-division I category of UIW Invitational
For the first time ever, the men’s cross-country team won the Non-Division I 8K at the UIW Invitational on Saturday at Live Oak City Park. The women placed third. This is the 11th annual event sponsored by NCAA DI University of the Incarnate Word (UIW). Head Coach Stephen Sherman commented, “Over the years UIW’s meet has been hit and miss for us. It’s the only meet we have ran every year as a program, so there is a lot of historical context. It’s been a meet where I’ve experienced a range of emotions. That said, I feel pretty good about the results today from both the men and the women.” The meet was the ninth consecutive year at Live Oak City Park and was the largest meet in school history. A total of 252 college athletes from 12 men’s teams and 13 women’s teams competed at the invitational.

Free event with journalist and activist Lydia Cacho Thursday
OLLU is hosting “La Voz de Lydia: International Activist” with Mexican journalist, author and human rights activist, Lydia Cacho, Thursday, at 6 p.m., in Thiry Auditorium. Cacho will spend the evening discussing her experiences as an advocate against the violence and sexual abuse of women and children.
Known as one of Mexico’s most fearless investigative reporters, Cacho has dedicated her career and voice to uncovering the stories of the global sex trade, organized crime and other violations of human rights. Her work has led to repeated threats against her life and even a brief imprisonment believed to be in revenge for the publishing of her book, “Los Demonios del Eden” (Demons of Eden), which was based on her research of child pornography among Mexican politicians and businessmen. As a result of the imprisonment, she successfully filed a counter-suit for corruption and violation of human rights. This made Cacho the first woman in Mexican history to file a federal suit against a governor, district attorney and judge.
The event is free and open to the public. RSVP to cwcs@ollusa.edu.
