Parking lot D2 to close this evening for restriping

Beginning this evening, sections of the parking lot D2 (temporary lot located on the west side of campus) will be blocked off so the painting department can restripe the parking spaces. The restriping will be done in phases and Campus Police asks for the community’s patience while the restriping takes place. Those who are frequent users of parking lot D2 are asked to use parking lots D, C (behind the tennis courts) or B (behind Casa Caritas) until the entire parking lot is complete.

Blood Drive and Know Your Numbers Health Fair Tuesday and Wednesday

The University community is invited to participate in a blood drive, sponsored by the South Texas Blood and Tissue Center and the Know Your Numbers Health Fair. The blood drive and all testing will take place Tuesday and Wednesday in Library Circle.

  • There will be two mobile Blood Banks on campus Tuesday and Wednesday from 9 a.m.–4 p.m. No appointments necessary. A photo ID is required.
  • The Harry Jersig Speech-Language-Hearing Center will be conducting hearing screenings on Tuesday from 11 a.m.-3 p.m., and Wednesday from 9 a.m.-3 p.m.
  • The Lions Club will be conducting Glaucoma Eye Testing on Tuesday and Wednesday from 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m.
  • HIV Rapid Testing will be available courtesy of the DALE Grant on Tuesday and Wednesday from 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m.
  • Hepatitis-C Screening will be available courtesy of the DALE Grant on Tuesday and Wednesday from 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m.
  • Texan’s Standing Tall Alcohol Survey will take place Tuesday and Wednesday from 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m.

Women’s Herstory Month celebration concludes with Edyka Chilomé

The Center for Women in Church and Society invites the OLLU community to the final event of the Women’s Herstory Month celebration, “This Bridge Called Our Hearts: Honoring the Power of Our Inheritance,” by Edyka Chilomé, on Thursday at 6 p.m. in Providence Hall, West Social Room. During this event, Chilomé will invite attendees to honor the creative inheritance of women as intergenerational builders and survivors.

Edyka Chilomé, born Erica Granados – De La Rosa, is a queer woman of color and cultural worker based in North Texas. She is a child of Salvadorian and Mexican immigrant activists with roots in the United Methodist Church and third world liberation movements. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in social and political philosophy from Loyola University Chicago and a Master of Arts in multicultural women’s studies from Texas Woman’s University, where her research focused on the decolonial power of spiritual [Art]ivism.

The event is free and open to the public.

Social Justice Reading Series to feature Matthew Salesses

OLLU’s MA/MFA program in Literature, Creative Writing and Social Justice welcomes author Matthew Salesses as part of the “Social Justice Reading Series,” Thursday at 7 p.m. in Providence Hall, Blue Room. Salesses will read from his new novel.

Salesses has written about race, adoption and family for the “New York Times Motherlode” blog, “The Good Men Project,” “The Rumpus,” “Hyphen Magazine,” and elsewhere. He is the author of “I’m Not Saying, I’m Just Saying” and “The Hundred-Year Flood.”

The reading is free and open to the public.

This reading is made possible in part with grants from the Edouard Foundation and Humanities Texas, the state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Mission and Ministry to host retreat for graduating seniors

The Division of Mission and Ministry invites graduating seniors to a special retreat, Friday, April 21, from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. in St. Joseph’s Room in the OLL Convent. Students will have time to interact with other graduates to discuss the next chapter in their lives. A special blessing will conclude the event. 2017 Health and Wellness Fair scheduled for April 5

The annual Health and Wellness Fair is scheduled for Wednesday, April 5 from 10 a.m.- 2 p.m. in Chapel Auditorium.

During the fair, participants will be able to receive screening for blood pressure, vision, glucose, body mass index (BMI), and strength testing. Attendees can also get information on fitness, wellness, nutrition, financial health and work/life balance.

Human Resources hosting supervisor training

Human Resources will be providing supervisor training in April. The dates and times are as follows:

  • Monday, April 24: 8:30 a.m.–12 p.m. and 1:30-5 p.m.
  • Tuesday, April 25: 8:30 a.m.–12 p.m. and 1:30-5 p.m.
  • Wednesday, April 26: 8:30 a.m.–12 p.m. and 1:30-5 p.m.

Each training session will take place in Main Building, Room 311B.

Invites will be sent to supervisors via email with more information on how to sign up for one of the six training sessions offered.

Joe Jackson named NAIA First-Team All-American and Alyssa Ward named to Honorable Mention Team

Men’s Basketball

The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) announced the 2016-2017 NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball All-America Teams last Thursday. OLLU’s Joe Jackson was named a 2016-2017 NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball First-Team All-American. Jackson is the first men’s basketball student-athlete to be named to the first-team. Players were selected by the NAIA-Men’s Basketball Coaches Association All-America Committee.

Women’s Basketball

The NAIA also announced the 2016-2017 NAIA Division I Women’s Basketball All-America Teams last Thursday. Alyssa Ward was named a 2016-2017 NAIA Division I Women’s Basketball Honorable Mention All-American. Ward led the Saints with 15.03 points and 3.19 steals per game; ranking sixth in the NAIA in steals per game. Players were selected by the NAIA Basketball Coaches Association All-America Committee.
