Athletics welcomes new ‘Voice of the Saints’ Karl Schoening

OLLU athletics is pleased to welcome new “Voice of the Saints” Karl Schoening, who has come onboard after the departure of long-time, in-game announcer Jay Tope. Tope vacated his position at the conclusion of the 2016-2017 season to concentrate on his company,, which promotes the positive publicity of high school student athletes and activities. Schoening joined the Saints in August 2017 as the public announcer for Saints women’s and men’s soccer and volleyball. Beginning in November, he will debut as the announcer for the university’s women’s and men’s basketball teams. In January 2018, he will start his in-game announcing for baseball, and in February, he will kick off softball.

A native of Austin, Texas, Schoening has lived in the central Texas area his whole life. He graduated from McNeil High School in Round Rock and Texas State University in San Marcos. After college, he stayed in the central Texas area working for iHeart Media in Austin and San Antonio as a producer for News Radio 1200 WOAI and Ticket 760 in San Antonio and AM 1300 The Zone in Austin. Schoening has nine years of broadcasting experience calling games for high school sports, NCAA D1 athletics and the NBA G-league.

Schoening’ s father, Bill, is in his 17th season as the San Antonio Spurs radio play-by-play voice, and his mother, Gerry, has worked at the Texas Methodist Foundation in Austin since 1996. Schoening joins other “Voice of the Saints” Michael Thompson, who returns for his ninth season as the Saints’ play-by-play live streaming broadcaster. All home games will be livestreamed through the university’s YouTube Channel, OLLUSaints.
