City of San Antonio holding public meeting to discuss relocation of cattle egrets near campus

The City of San Antonio is holding a public meeting on Feb. 11 at 6 p.m. in Providence Hall, West Social Room, to discuss the safety concerns regarding the large roost of cattle egrets that are located at Elmendorf Lake Park across from campus.

Recently, Joint Base San Antonio (JBSA) contacted the City of San Antonio and expressed concerns regarding the threat of bird strikes in the heavily populated areas between Elmendorf Lake and Kelly Field. Due to health and safety concerns, JBSA and the City support a recommendation from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) for lessening the hazards associated with the cattle egret roost.

As part of the public meeting, officials from the City, JBSA and USDA will discuss habitat modification activities that will take place at Elmendorf Lake Park, some of which will include loud noises and the use of sirens and lasers that may be heard or observed by the community.

OLLU employees and students are encouraged to attend the meeting to learn more about the process that will take place and to provide input.
