Reading with spring 2019 Visiting Writer Ire’ne Lara Silva tomorrow

OLLU’s spring 2019 Visiting Writer, Ire’ne Lara Silva, will hold a public reading tomorrow at 6 p.m. in Providence Hall, Blue Room.

Silva is the author of two poetry collections, “furia” (Mouthfeel Press, 2010) and “Blood Sugar Canto” (Saddle Road Press, 2016), which were both finalists for the International Latino Book Award in Poetry; an e-chapbook, “Enduring Azucares,” (Sibling Rivalry Press, 2015), as well as a short story collection, “flesh to bone” (Aunt Lute Books, 2013), which won the Premio Aztlán. She and poet Dan Vera are also the co-editors of “Imaniman: Poets Writing in the Anzaldúan Borderlands,” (Aunt Lute Books, 2017), a collection of poetry and essays.

She is the recipient of a 2017 NALAC Fund for the Arts Grant, the final recipient of the Alfredo Cisneros del Moral Award, the Fiction Finalist for AROHO’s 2013 Gift of Freedom Award, and the 2008 recipient of the Gloria Anzaldúa Milagro Award. She is currently working on her first novel, “Naci.”

OLLU community invited to participate in service projects during vOLLUnteer Impact Saturday

The vOLLUnteet Unity Council and the Center for Service-Learning and Volunteerism (CSLV) invites the OLLU community to take part in vOLLUnteer Impact on Saturday from 8 a.m.-2 p.m.

During this university-wide service event, volunteers will be divided up to help at following nonprofit agencies in the area:

  • American Sunrise
  • San Juan De Los Lagos Church
  • Habitat for Humanity
  • Good Samaritan Community Services
  •  Guadalupe Community Center.

Volunteers will be assembling furniture, painting, doing yardwork, sorting donations, and doing office work for these nonprofits.

There are 90 volunteer slots available.

OLLU 2019 Fiesta® Medal now available

2019 OLLU Fiesta® Medal is the first installment of the Sacred Heart Chapel series

The OLLU 2019 Fiesta® Medal is now available. This medal is the first installment of the Sacred Heart Chapel medal series. The previous OLLU medals were part of the Main Building series, a 10-year series that celebrated the first building constructed on OLLU’s campus. The Sacred Heart Chapel series will shift the focus as the community prepares to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the construction of the Chapel in 2023.

Medals can be purchased for $10 in the OLLU Bookstore on campus or at the Fiesta® Store, located on Broadway. Once online ordering is available, a link will be sent via email and social media.

Limited quantities of the Main Building series are still available online through the OLLU Bookstore.

This year’s medal has been sponsored by Randolph-Brooks Federal Credit Union. This is the fourth year the RBFCU has sponsored OLLU’s medal.

HACU awarding roundtrip airline tickets for students to travel home

The Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) and Southwest Airlines have partnered once again to award roundtrip e-passes to undergraduate and graduate students who travel at least 200 miles from home to pursue a higher education and meet the eligibility criteria through the annual ¡Lánzate! / Take Off! Travel Program

A selection committee consisting of national education advocates and community leaders will select the award recipients. Recipients may be awarded one to four roundtrip e-passes to use when traveling to/from their college or university. The complimentary e-passes can be used for travel to Southwest Airlines destinations in the continental United States (restrictions apply).

2019 faculty promotions and tenure announced

The Office of Academic Affairs announced the following faculty promotions and tenure for 2019:

  • Candace Zepeda, PhD, English – promotion to associate professor
  • Christine Carmichael, PhD, CCC-SLP, Communication Disorders – promotion to professor
  • Jared Montoya, PhD, Leadership Studies – promotion to professor
  • Kristin O’Donnell, PhD, Psychology – promotion to associate professor
  • Rebecca Gomez, PhD, LCSW, Social Work – promotion to associate professor
  • Yu Sun, PhD, Leadership Studies – promotion to associate professor

OLLU spring 2019 employee giving campaign kicks off Thursday

The spring 2019 OLLU employee giving campaign kicks off with the Big Give on March 28 and runs through April 12.

Employees are encouraged to show their OLLU pride by giving back to student scholarships. There are several ways to give:

  • Make an online donation during the Big Give
  • Make a cash donation during the Big Give pep rally (Thursday, 12-2 p.m. in the Mall Area)
  • Sign up for a recurring or one-time donation on the OLLU website (with credit card)
  • Fill out a payroll deduction form and make a recurring contribution

All employees who donate will be invited to attend an ice cream social on April 12 from 3:30-5 p.m. in Casa Caritas. The top three departments with the highest percentage of giving will win the following:

  • First place – breakfast tacos for the entire team
  • Second place – pizza party
  • Third place – cake

Microsoft Visio now available to employees

ITS is announcing the availability of Microsoft’s Visio flowcharting software for OLLU employees. Visio is available for self-installation to OLLU employees using OLLU-managed computers with Windows 10 installed. If employees are unable to successfully install the software on their own, they can request assistance by contacting the ITS Helpdesk at helpdesk@ollusa.edu.
