Support group available for caregivers

OLLU is hosting a caregiver support group on Thursday from 12:30-1:30 p.m., at the Elliott House. It is designed for those caring for loved ones with a variety of challenges, including Alzheimer’s Disease and chronic illness.

The session will help caregivers who are feeling depressed, anxious, frustrated or stressed and will show them how to address challenging and difficult behaviors.

Plate sale to benefit OLLU scholarship

A plate sale will be held at St. Leo’s Catholic Church Hall on Aug. 10 to benefit the Esther Morales Liedecke Scholarship that is being established at OLLU. The Liedecke family is creating the scholarship in honor of their late mother, Esther, who is an alumna of OLLU. 

A Chicken and sausage plate with trimmings will be sold for $8. St. Leo’s Hall is located at 4423 South Flores St. in San Antonio.

First PhD Social Work cohort begins

Twelve pioneers are paving the way as the first PhD cohort in the Worden School of Social Service at Our Lady of the Lake University. The new online PhD program was launched on June 3, 2019, with a mission to prepare scholars for service within minority serving institutions. The doctoral students are engaged in a two-week, summer residency on campus with their peers and PhD faculty members.

First 2019-2020 employee benefits fair set for July 31

The first of two employee benefits fairs will be held on Wednesday from 9 a.m.–noon and 1-3 p.m., in Providence Hall, West Social Room. The second will be held on Wednesday Aug. 28 in Main Building, Room 311.

Annual benefits enrollment provides benefit-eligible employees the opportunity to start, change or end benefits, which become effective Oct. 1, 2019. The exception is medical and dependent care reimbursement plans, which begin Sept. 1, 2019.  

All eligible employees making changes must enroll online in order to change benefits. Current benefits will carry over. The exception is the Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA), which require enrollment each year.

All full-time employees will be able to complete enrollment through Web Advisor under Benefits Enrollment. Employees wishing to make change will need to adhere to the following deadlines.

  • Staff employee enrollment period (includes deans and administration) begins Wednesday. Deadline to enroll is Aug. 14 by 11:59 p.m.
  • Faculty enrollment period begins Aug. 28. Deadline to enroll is Sept. 12 by 11:59.

  2. Click on Web Advisor for Staff (or Faculty if it applies)
  3. Click on Employee Profile
  4. Click on Review Current Benefits
  5. Click on Benefit Enrollment
  6. If you aren’t sure of your additional current benefits, check the Pay Advice for your last pay period.

Dr. Quintanilla participated in Walkers’ Gallery in San Marcos

Octavio Quintanilla, PhD, associate professor of English and San Antonio Poet Laureate, read his poetry during an artist’s reception for a “Time” exhibit at the Walkers’ Gallery, which took place last Friday in San Marcos.

In response to a call for art inspired by the theme of “Time,” the Walkers’ Gallery selected four poets to read from their works.

Dr. Quintanilla’s presentation spoke to “The Creative Imagination: Time and Process.”

Sister Margit Nagy delivered presentation on San Antonio’s Japan connections

Sister Margit Nagy, PhD, CDP, professor of history, presented an interactive visual talk on San Antonio’s Japan Connections to the Optimist Club of San Antonio last Tuesday.

After becoming interested in modern Japanese history when she was an OLLU student, Sister Nagy received a Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Grant in 1976 to do dissertation research in Japan and was affiliated with Waseda University.

She conducted postdoctoral research at the University of Tokyo School of Law as a Fulbright Visiting Professor from 1984-1985. In 2015, the government of Japan presented her with the “Order of Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon” in recognition of her service in the promotion of mutual understanding between Japan and the U.S.

OLLU names Bruce Lenington new head softball coach

OLLU has announced the hiring of Bruce Lenington as the new head softball coach.  Lenington comes to OLLU after an assistant coach stint at Michigan State University.

“I am really excited about the diverse background that Bruce has in education, coaching and administration,” said OLLU athletic director Shane Hurley. “His background as an educator and high school coach for 17 years means that he’s well-equipped with the experience to groom student-athletes with diverse backgrounds and needs. Furthermore, his club and NCAA DI experience will lend connections across the country that he will capitalize on for the development of our softball program.”

OLLU’s Stacy Stephens selected for Texas High School Basketball Hall of Fame

Women’s basketball coach Stacy Stephens will be inducted into the Texas High School Basketball Hall of Fame as a member of the Class of 2020.

A former standout at the University of Texas who played professionally, Stephens led Winnsboro High School in Winnsboro to three consecutive State Tournament appearances in 1998, 1999 and 2000. This included two State Championships in 1999 and 2000. Stephens was named All-State three times and All-State Tournament three consecutive years.

Stephens, along with three other standout players and four legendary coaches, will be honored during the induction ceremony on Saturday, May 16, 2020, in San Antonio, during the annual Texas Association of Basketball Coaches Clinic. Read full story at www.ollusaintsathletics.com.

OLLU volleyball announces 2019 schedule

The OLLU volleyball program has released its match schedule for the fall featuring 24 regular season matches, including eight home matches and the Red River Conference (RRAC) Championship Tournament.
