OLLU women’s basketball season overview

The women’s basketball team took home the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) regular-season title with a 25-5 overall record and 17-1 mark in conference. The Saints finished as runner-ups in the RRAC Tournament and qualified for the NAIA D1 Championship Tournament as the fourth seed.

Kasey Saldana (Third Team) and Dezeree White (Honorable Mention) both received the NAIA All-America Award.

Keviona Barber (Honorable Mention), Jamia Miller (Second Team), Saldana (First Team), White (First Team) and Lena Wilson (Second Team) were all named to the Red River All-Conference team. White and Wilson also were named to the Red River All-Tournament team.

White earned Red River Defensive Player of the Year and was the Red River Player of the Week for Feb. 10-16. She was also named NAIA D1 Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for the same dates and became only the fifth player in OLLU history to receive national honors.

Wilson became the newest member of the Saints 1,000-Point Club and ranks third in all-time scoring with 1,372 points.

Individual statistic leaders included White with 207 rebounds and 97 steals, Saldana with 17.47 points per game, Barber with 91 assists and Sarah Mgbeike with 42 blocks.

The Saints set the single-game scoring record with a 131-63 victory over the University of the Southwest on Feb. 1. OLLU broke the record again four games later by putting up 136 points against LSU-Alexandria.

OLLU won 14 straight RRAC games and only lost one conference matchup in the regular season. They averaged over 100 points per game and ranked first in the NAIA in scoring offense per game, scoring margin, turnover margin, field goal percentage, free-throw percentage and total scoring offense. The Saints maintained a top 25 ranking in the NAIA and were ranked sixth to begin the season.

Stacy Stephens completed her first season as an interim head coach and was recently elevated to head coach. She spent two seasons as assistant coach before being promoted. Stephens enters 2020 with an impressive 26-6 record when leading the Saints. She was named Red River Coach of the Year for the 2019-2020 season and was awarded Head Coach of the Week by HoopDirt.com for Feb. 10-16.
