Men’s soccer opens the season with 2-1 win over Howard Payne
The men’s soccer team beat Howard Payne University (HPU) 2-1 to open the 2021 season. The Saints are 1-0 while HPU drops to 0-1.
Head Coach Shane Hurley said, “Our effort was good and we were able to work in different combinations of players and finally see how they performed in a real game. We came out of it with things to improve upon.”
The Saints lead the series 2-1 and previously defeated the Yellow Jackets 2-1 in 2013.
The Saints started strong with a penalty kick goal by Norberto Lira 17 minutes into the game. Juan Martin Chica added to the lead just a few minutes into the second half. HPU scored with four minutes remaining but the Saints held on for the victory. The Saints tallied five shots on goal and eight corners.

Leading the way for the Saints’ offense was Bagley, who had two shots on goal. HPU’s Andrew Paz and Junior Saavedra each tallied one shot on goal.
Overall, the Saints tallied 11 shots, five on goal. The Yellow Jackets recorded four shots with two being on goal.
Joseph Baker started in goal and played the full 90 minutes with one save.
The Saints play at St. Mary’s University on Feb. 11 at 7 p.m.
