Women’s soccer takes down Howard Payne University 3-1
The women’s soccer team defeated Howard Payne University (HPU) 3-1 on the road on Wednesday. The Saints are now 2-0 while the Yellow Jackets fall to 0-1.
Head Coach Arthur Salazar commented, “Overall it was a good performance, and I’m glad that we were able to come away with the win. When we have 32 shots, 19 of them on goal, there are still questions that need to be answered. Defensively we were sound and only gave up two shots. We just need to be more ruthless in front of goal so that the score line reflects our efforts in the run of play.”
The Saints previously beat the Yellow Jackets 5-4 in 2008. OLLU leads the series 1-0.
The Saints and Yellow Jackets were scoreless until the 70:47 mark. Freshman Kyleigh Spree-Kolos (FR/Victoria, Texas) put the Saints up 1-0 and then scored again less than four minutes later. The Saints held the 2-0 advantage until the Yellow Jackets scored with just over five minutes remaining. With the lead cut in half, the Saints responded quickly. Dawson Brinkley (JR/San Antonio, Texas) put the Saints up 3-1 at the 86:17 mark, and OLLU came out victorious. The Saints put up 19 shots on goal and limited the Yellow Jackets to two.
