Jose Diaz secures 200th hit as OLLU baseball splits series against Oklahoma Wesleyan

The baseball team split a two-game series against Oklahoma Wesleyan University (OKWU) on Tuesday. The Saints fell in the first game 9-4 and won their first game of the season 1-0 to close the series. OLLU is 1-5 on the season while the Eagles move to 4-1. Jose Diaz (SR/Pinar del Rio, Cuba) surpassed 200 hits as a Saint in the first game.

Game one

The Saints started strong by leading 4-1 after two innings. Jose Diaz singled to drive in Noah Rodriguez (SO/Victoria, Texas) in the bottom of the first inning. Diaz also drove in a pair of runs in the second inning. The Eagles would go on to score nine runs and ended the Saints’scoring spree after the second inning. Jose Ramirez III (JR/Donna, Texas), Javier De Alejandro (FR/San Antonio, Texas), Joey Baker (SR/Victoria, Texas), Devin Benavides (FR/Laredo, Texas), Layne Klostermann (SO/Raymondville, Texas) and Hamilkar Medina (JR/Carolina, Puerto Rico) all made appearances on the mound for the Saints. Diaz went 3-for-4 at the plate and tallied three RBIs.

Game two

There were only six hits total in the second game, with three by each team. The Saints scored in the first inning with another single from Diaz to score Matt Mihalov (SR/Conroe, Texas). Five Saints pitchers combined to only allow three hits and strike out eight batters. Diaz picked up his first save of the season and led the Saints to their first victory of 2021. Francisco Martinez (FR/San Antonio, Texas) recorded 10 putouts at first base.
