A prayer service to honor the life of Saint Óscar Romero, Archbishop of San Salvador, will be held Tuesday at 4 p.m. in Sacred Heart Chapel. Sponsored by Mission and Ministry, the service also will be live-streamed via www.facebook.com/ollu.ministry.

The service will be held on the eve of Romero’s death and feast day and will include a dramatic interpretation of the final homily given at a Mass by Romero in 1980, which will be performed by the José Rubén De León. A tribute to four U.S. women religious martyrs who were murdered by the El Salvador National Guard nine months after the assassination of Romero also will be featured.

Óscar Romero served as Archbishop of San Salvador in El Salvador, a nation in Central America, during a period of violence against the poor, especially rural farmers, or “campesinos.” As the violence intensified, and his friends were being murdered for standing with the poor, he began to speak out.

Romero became known for using his position to decry the violence and stand up for the oppressed. He was martyred for his faith on March 24, 1980, while celebrating Mass. Romero was formally declared a martyr by Pope Francis in February 2015 and was canonized a saint on October 14, 2018, alongside Pope Paul VI.
