The competitive cheer and dance teams are preparing for the upcoming fall and spring sports seasons. Head Coach Crystal Brock and Assistant Coach Gabriel Guel enter their second year at OLLU.

Both programs plan to attend as many athletic events as possible. It will be the first time in OLLU athletics history that soccer and volleyball will have support from cheer and dance. Brock said, “It is great for the student-athletes knowing they are supported and are warranted of the spirit community. We will be on the sidelines and in the stands doing routines.” The cheer and dance team will also perform during halftimes of select games. Cross-country and track and field will receive full support from the programs as well.

The programs also commit to community service opportunities. Their next event will be on Wednesday during Spirit Day at OLLU. During the holidays the teams help at food banks and perform at malls and schools.

National Cheerleading Association (NCA) staff from across the nation arrived in San Antonio to teach techniques and safety protocols to the OLLU cheer squad during a three-day camp this past summer. Each athlete contributed to the team’s success and earned superior blue ribbons, which are awarded to those athletes who exemplify the NCA Standards of Excellence.

The cheer team earned their first NCA national bid and will compete in Daytona, Fla., on April 6-10, 2022. “The bid means we’ve been invited to compete at the national level for the collegiate cheerleading invitational,” Brock said. “We will compete with schools from the NAIA but also other programs from around the country.”
