Men’s basketball drops tight game

The men’s basketball team lost a close game to NAIA No. 23-ranked Texas A&M University-Texarkana (TAMUT) 75-70 on Saturday. The Saints drop to 9-14 overall and 4-9 in the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC). The Eagles jump to 17-7 overall and 10-5 in the conference.

History

The Saints were 1-2 against the Eagles prior to the game.

Basics

Both teams shot similar numbers from the field in the first half. The Saints forced 10 turnovers and only committed three. Joseph Anderson (SR/Houston, Texas), Marlon Williams (SR/Jacksonville, Fla.) and Oscar Maldonado (JR/Greeley, Colo.) all had eight points in the first half. OLLU took a four-point lead into halftime behind 41.2 percent shooting from the field. Traylynn Spencer had 12 points and six rebounds for the Eagles.

The Saints’ lead was shattered five minutes into the second half. The Eagles scored nine straight points to lead 52-44. OLLU was able to shrink the Eagles’ lead to three points with 37 seconds left in the game. The Saints were forced to foul, and Texarkana stayed disciplined at the free-throw line to win 75-70.

Offensive/defensive standouts

Williams led the Saints with 21 points. Ruben Monzon (SR/San Diego, Calif.) grabbed a team-high eight rebounds. Anderson and Lennox Jones (SR/Richmond, Texas) led OLLU with four assists each.

Spencer led Texarkana with 23 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double. Kobe Powell had a team-high five assists.

Inside the box

OLLU combined for 24-of-64 shooting for 37.5 percent, 9-of-35 from three-point range for 25.7 percent and 13-of-21 from the free-throw line for 61.9 percent.

TAMUT combined for 20-of-41 from the field for 48.8 percent, 7-of-16 three-pointers for 43.8 percent and 28-of-36 from the charity stripe for 77.8 percent.

The Saints grabbed 33 rebounds while the Eagles gathered 35. OLLU forced 18 turnovers and committed eight.
