Women’s basketball wins on seniors’ day

The women’s basketball team remains unbeaten in the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) after a 98-64 win over Texas A&M University-Texarkana (TAMUT) on Saturday afternoon. The Saints move to 16-10 overall and 13-0 in the RRAC. The Eagles drop to 7-17 overall and 5-10 in the conference.    

History

The Saints were 4-0 against the Eagles prior to today’s matchup.

Basics

The Saints’ offense shined on Saturday against the Eagles. They shot over 50 percent from the field in the first two quarters, and Natalia Trevino (JR/Laredo, Texas) recorded nine points in the second frame. OLLU marked a 56-23 lead at halftime and led by as many as 36 points in the first half. The Saints forced 12 turnovers in the first 20 minutes.

The Eagles shot much better in the third quarter from the field at 64.3 percent. Despite the improvement, the Saints’ offense proved too much in the second half. Four Saints players finished in double-digit scoring as OLLU remains undefeated in the conference with one game left in the regular season. The single-game record of points scored this season is 98 points.

Offensive/defensive standouts

Trevino led the Saints with 28 points. Emiko Hemphill (SR/San Antonio, Texas) had a team-high seven rebounds. Barber finished with 14 assists to earn a double-double.

Naomi Tekleab led TAMUT with 16 points. Tekleab also had a team-high six rebounds. Bailee Taft led the Eagles with three assists.

Inside the box

OLLU combined for 37-of-64 shooting for 57.8 percent, 13-of-27 from three-point range for 48.1 percent and 11-of-19 from the free-throw line for 57.9 percent. TAMUT shot 22-of-48 for 45.8 percent, 3-of-14 three-pointers for 21.4 percent and 17-of-24 from the free-throw line for 70.8 percent.

The Saints grabbed 30 rebounds while the Eagles collected 31. OLLU forced 23 turnovers and committed nine.
