Women’s basketball downs LSUA to advance to RRAC semifinals

OLLU women’s basketball team defeated LSU-Alexandria (LSUA) 73-58 in the quarterfinals of the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) Tournament on Sunday. The Saints are now 18-10 overall this season.

Head Coach Jillian Flores Bennett commented, “We came out hot in the first quarter and put them away early. The score ended up being a little closer than I would’ve liked but we experimented with some different lineups in preparation for the remainder of the tournament. We are excited to play Louisiana Christian University tomorrow and be challenged against a solid team.”

The Saints were 11-1 against the Generals prior to today’s matchup.

The Saints started the RRAC Tournament on a solid note. They outscored the Generals 25-2 in the first quarter, backed by 53.3 percent shooting from the field. Cormia Lewis (SO/Houston, Texas) had eight points in the first quarter, and Natalia Trevino (JR/Laredo, Texas) added three steals. OLLU didn’t allow a three-point bucket by the Generals in the second quarter, and seven Saints players recorded at least two points each. The Saints led by 28 points at halftime.

In the second half, the Generals outplayed the Saints, but it wasn’t enough to erase the deficit at halftime. OLLU struggled shooting in both quarters at under 40 percent from the field. The Saints ended up winning by 14 points and have yet to lose to an RRAC opponent all season.
