New Provost arrives in June, joins newly structured leadership team

Alan Silva, PhD, will assume the position of Provost/Vice President of Academic Affairs in June, bringing more than two decades of executive experience in higher education. He most recently served as Provost and Executive Vice President at Marian University in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Dr. Silva joins a newly structured leadership team that includes Executive Vice President/Chief of Staff George Williams, PhD, Vice President for Advancement Victoria Pineda, Associate Dean for Undergraduate Affairs Alycia Maurer, PhD, and Associate Dean for Graduate Affairs Vanessa Clark, PhD.

Like Dr. Silva, Pineda starts in June and arrives with a wealth of experience, most recently as Vice President of Institutional Advancement at the Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine in El Paso. A Certified Fundraising Executive, she has been responsible for more than $75.1 million in individual donations at various universities and nonprofits.

A self-described “cradle Catholic,” Dr. Silva grew up with a strong faith, studied the lives of popes and thought he might become a priest. “The Catholic roots of Our Lady of the Lake University are very important to me,” he said. “This is my third Catholic institution.”

His previous school, Marian University, was founded by the Sisters of St. Francis. He also served as Provost and Executive Vice President at St. Catherine University, a school in St. Paul, Minnesota, founded by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet.

“I have a great fondness for the charism of the Sisters and what they’ve done to create great institutions of higher education,” he said.

A former English professor, Dr. Silva is an avid reader of literature and poetry. He is a film enthusiast, enjoys live theater and is passionate about sports, especially basketball.

He is excited to start at OLLU.

“I want to lean in very strongly into the Catholic and Hispanic parts of this institution,” he said. “I want to build new programs. I want to strengthen existing academic programs so that students and faculty can flourish at OLLU.”

Adelante Training and Development Conference a rousing success

The second annual Adelante Training and Development Conference, held May 22-23,  was a rousing success.

The theme for the conference – “The Difference You Make” – focused on the tremendous impact OLLU employees have had on our students.

Participants had a chance to hear Trellis Strategies representatives share on customer service while delivering great tools, examples, and interactions with the crowd in order to relate, inspire, and reflect on personal and interpersonal skills in customer service. OLLU staff, faculty, and Trellis volunteered as session speakers with professional development topics to share during the two day conference.

Staff Assembly would like to express its gratitude to OLLU President Abel Chávez, PhD, for his welcoming address, Vice-President of Mission and Ministry, Gloria Urrabazo, for her prayer to pause and focus on the theme, and Assistant Vice President of Administration, Mary Scotka, for her leadership in these preparations. Staff Assembly also thanks all of the speakers, participants, and Adelante committee team for supporting this conference and making this event so memorable!

Hendrick Ramirez earns All-America honors in 1500 meters

OLLU’s Hendrick Ramirez finished fifth in the 1500 meters at the 72nd Annual NAIA Men’s Outdoor Track and Field National Championship last week, earning All-American honors.

The Saints men competed in the 100m, 200m, 400m, 4x100mR, 1500m and the Triple Jump.

Ramirez made it into the finals in the 1500m after placing first in his heat with a time of 3:53.68. That time propelled him to the finals held today, and he finished in fifth with a time of 3:50.62 to earn NAIA All-American honors. Ramirez also earned NAIA All-American honors in the one-mile event of the Indoor National Championship earlier this year.

Head Coach Patrick Torres commented, “Hendrick Ramirez being an individual NAIA All-American was a clear highlight. As the rest of our opens mature, our national performance will climb as well. A controversial call took our chances at an incredible 4x400m relay, but I am proud of them and the whole squad.”

Savary, Ekpenyong named NAIA tennis All Americans

OLLU’s Kyllian Savary and David Ekpenyong have been named to the 2024 NAIA Men’s Tennis All-America teams.

The senior boasted a 16-3 singles record and 13-6 doubles mark in his OLLU career prior to this season. This year he posted a 14-6 record in doubles and 16-2 record in singles.

Ekpenyong also had a standout season. The freshman from Nigeria had double digit wins in singles and doubles as well. He went 14-6 when playing doubles and 14-2 on the singles lines.

OLLU Athletics finishes second in RRAC All-Sports Award

OLLU missed out on its 10th Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) All-Sports Award in 2023-2024 after capturing the award for the last nine of 10 seasons. Edging out the Saints for the top award this academic year was Xavier University of Louisiana by 18 points.

Xavier finished as runners-up to the Saints in each of its first two years in the RRAC.

The Saints are tied with former RRAC member Houston Baptist University for the most awards all-time with nine.

The All-Sports Award is given annually to the RRAC athletic program that performs best across the conference’s sports in a given academic year. Points are awarded to the top five teams in regular season conference standings using a 10-8-6-4-2 scoring system, while results in conference tournaments and championship events merit additional points on a 5-4-3-2-1 basis. In sports such as tennis, track and field, golf and cross country, postseason team finishes are awarded regular season and postseason points. Saints women end season at NAIA Track and Field championships

Members of the OLLU women’s track and field team participated in the 43rd Annual NAIA Women’s Outdoor Track and Field National Championship last week. The women competed in the 400mH, 4x100mR, 4x400mR and 5000m.

Aziza Clark and Loreaya Turner finished with a great season. Clark placed 11th in the prelims, missing the 400m hurdle finals by three tenths of a second. Turner finished 21st in the same event. Both finished the season as the two fastest freshman 400m hurdlers in the NAIA.

Head Coach Patrick Torres commented, “We keep elevating our performance at the national meet. Our individuals didn’t make the finals, but they put themselves in contention. Our relays also didn’t disappoint. I’m excited for next year; with development and new pieces, we will be even better.”
