Volleyball middles shine in win over Schreiner

The volleyball team defeated the NCAA D3 Schreiner University (SU( Mountaineers 3-1 on Sept. 13.

The Saints have faced SU 19 times since 2007. The Saints have emerged victorious in all but three matches against the NCAA D3 Mountaineers. The team’s most recent win, propelled by four Saints with double-digit kills, has bolstered their overall record to 7-6, while SU’s record now stands at 4-3.

Assistant Coach Raven Swain shared her thoughts, “Tonight was a great team match on the road. We had a lot of different people contribute to the win and had some great attacks from our middles – Makaelyn Perez and Nicole Bir, who continued to work hard in transition, something we’ve been on them about. This opened so many opportunities for our pins. We credit Schreiner; they are well-coached, had a great crowd and played well. Now, as we return to the gym next week, we are ready to build on this momentum for the upcoming conference play!”

Nicole Bir, in her debut match with the Saints, was nothing short of phenomenal. She delivered seven kills on 15 total attacks and led the team with a hitting percentage of .467. Camila Ramirez and Mia Francis each contributed 13 kills, Makaelyn Perez added 12, and Victoria Urbanczyk finished with 10 kills.

Lauren Reynard contributed 47 assists, the sixth most in her career at OLLU. The Saints’ all-time leader in digs, Tina Trevino, totaled 30. Ramirez also added 23 digs, the most in her four years at OLLU. Chanisty Villarreal Bermea also marked a career-high four service aces.

As a team, the Saints dominated in three of four sets – 25-23, 25-13, 18-25 and 25-16. In the third game, the Mountaineers set a hitting percentage of .429, the highest in the match. Overall, the Saints recorded 62 kills on 169 total attacks for a hitting percentage of .243. The Mountaineers’ stats were 40 kills on 152 total attacks for a hitting percentage of .158.

The Saints will travel to Texarkana, Texas, next for two matches against Texas A&M University—Texarkana to open their conference schedule. The matches are scheduled for Friday at 6 p.m. and Saturday at 11 a.m.

Women’s soccer shuts out Schreiner 2-0

The women’s soccer team blanked Schreiner University (SU) 2-0 on Sept. 9. The Saints improve to 1-1-1 while the Mountaineers fall to 1-2-1.

Head Coach Lee Williams said, “We started strong and capitalized on a well worked set piece to take an early lead. It is satisfying as a coach when something we have worked on a lot on the training ground comes to fruition. The performance today was ‘gritty not pretty’ but they showed on the field what it takes to be a Saint. The second goal killed off the game at a good time. The ideas are coming and now we focus on our execution. We work hard to win the ball and we need to be patient in possession and penetrate at the right time. I’m happy for the group and the ‘game changers’ were excellent today when they came on.”

The Saints wasted no time pressuring on offense. Sophomore Eleonora Diversi scored in the second minute with an assist from Leah Tapia. The Saints took four shots in the following 23 minutes while allowing only one by the Mountaineers. Dusty Van Huss took two shots in the last few minutes before halftime, and the Saints led 1-0 at the break. Aspen Ulibarri totaled two shots in the first 10 minutes of the second half, but neither were on goal. The first shot on goal in the second frame by the Saints was a goal by Angela Garcia. The freshman scored in the 66th minute to increase OLLU’s lead to 2-0. Savanna Serna was shown a yellow card at the 79th minute. Anisia Serrano had two shots, with one on goal, in the final six minutes. OLLU’s defense was solid and forced goalkeeper Samantha Valadez to only make one save. Valadez earned the win after playing all 90 minutes.

University transitioning to new system for sending out emergency messages

Over the next few weeks, the university will be transitioning to a new system for sending out emergency messages and for allowing users to send urgent messages to the University Police Department (UPD). The new system is from InformaCast by Singlewire and includes an app that can be downloaded to a mobile phone.

Panic Alarms
Through the app, university community members will have access to a mobile “OLLU Panic Alarm.” When the panic alarm button is pushed on the app, university police are notified immediately and can begin tracking the location of the mobile device. It also allows the user to quick dial university police through a call button. The police can only track the location of a mobile device when the panic alarm is activated.

Please Note: The mobile phone panic alarm is replacing the hard-wired panic buttons in university offices. The technology for the hard-wired buttons is no longer supported.

Download the App Now
The InformaCast app is currently available to the OLLU community and can be downloaded through the iPhone App Store or Google Play on Android.

Once the app is downloaded, OLLU community members can log in using their university email address and password. All students, faculty and staff are encouraged to download the app and log in now. The panic alarm will be the first button seen on the screen upon log in. Only use the panic button in the event of an emergency.

Check and Add Contact Information
When logged into the app, contact information can be reviewed by selecting “Self Service” in the bottom right corner of the app. This will show the contact information that has been preloaded into the system. For most community members, the mobile number they use for multifactor authentication is the contact number in the system.

Users can add up to 10 phone numbers into the system by selecting “+Add Device.” All numbers added will receive emergency and community notifications through the system.

By selecting “Scenarios” in the bottom left corner, the app will return to the screen with the panic alarm button.

Message Types
The InformaCast system will allow the university to send emergency and community notification messages through:

  • Push notifications through the app – this may require going into phone settings and selecting “Allow Notifications” for the InformaCast app
  • Text messaging
  • Email
  • Recorded phone call
  • Speakers on office desk phones
  • Campus speakers

Individuals who do not download the app will still receive messages through email, text message (if they have provided a cell phone number for university multifactor authentication), speaker on desk phone and through campus speakers.

System Test
A test of the system will take place within the next few weeks. The date will be announced via Lake Weekly and email.

Issues with the App
If users have issues downloading or using the InformaCast app, they should contact the university Help Desk at helpdesk@ollusa.edu, call 210-431-3908 or visit the Help Desk on the second floor of the Walter Student Service Center on the San Antonio campus.
