McNair Scholars program to hold application information session

The McNair Scholars program will host an information session on Wednesday for students interested in applying to the program. The session will take place during community hour in the McNair Lab in Lower Level Moye Hall. Signing up for the informational session will guarantee a meal, so sign up today.

The McNair Scholars program is seeking curious students who ask good questions and want to pursue a graduate degree following their time at OLLU.

Eligibility criteria to be a McNair Scholar include:

  • Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
  • Have at least 45 credit hours.
  • Have at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA.
  • Be a first-generation student with limited income or underrepresented in graduate education.
  • Be committed to attending graduate school and earning a doctoral degree.

Students invited to take part in Platicás series

A Platicás Series surrounding the first-generation college student experience will be hosted by the Promoting Post-baccalaureate Opportunities for Hispanic Americans Program (PPOHA), McNair Scholars Post-baccalaureate Achievement Program, First-Generation Student Organization and Tri-Alpha Honor Society. All students on the San Antonio campus are invited to join for food and conversation. Sessions will take place the first Wednesday of the month starting this Wednesday, Sept. 4, in the Library Community Room. Session topics include, Nuestros testimonios: Reclaiming our stories through Platicás, Quien soy? Self-discovery through platicás, Perpetual foreign hood: Do I belong here?, and Asserting your worth through self-love. Food will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis starting at 5 p.m. with the Platicá starting promptly at 5:30 p.m.

The Ronald E. McNair Postbaccalaureate Achievement Program is proud to announce the 2023-2024 McNair Scholars, who have not only been accepted into prestigious graduate schools but have also committed to one! Join us in celebrating their accomplishments and wishing them all the luck in their exciting new journeys ahead.

Marcus Antu, will be pursuing his Doctorate of Philosophy in Psychological Sciences with full funding at the University of Missouri.

Jacqueline Baldazo-Padilla, will be pursuing her Doctor of Physical Therapy at the University of Texas Health San Antonio.

Kimberley Carrizales, will be pursuing her Master of Social Work at Baylor University.

Francisco Frade, will be pursuing his Master of Science in Cyber Security Program at Our Lady of the Lake University.

Angelique Luna, will be pursuing her Master of Science of Kinesiology and Health with full funding at the University of Wyoming.

Alyn Manzo, will be pursuing her Doctorate of Occupational Therapy at the University of Southern California.

Francisco “Frankie” Saldaña, Will be pursuing his Master of Social Work at Our Lady of the Lake University,

Stephanie Sandoval, will be pursuing her Master of Arts/Doctorate of Philosophy in Speech Language Pathology with partial funding at the University of Kansas.

OLLU McNair Day of Service

On Feb. 10, OLLU McNair Scholars teamed up with Habitat for Humanity, alongside McNair Scholars from UTSA and St. Mary’s for a day of service.

Seventeen students, staff, family, and friends of the OLLU program came together to set the framing of a home, build community, and have fun. This event marks the second year McNair Scholars Programs from the San Antonio area have gathered to collectively give back and serve the community.

Applications open for aspiring McNair Scholars

The mission of the McNair Scholars Program is to provide encouragement and services to limited income and first-generation college students, while also increasing the participation from underrepresented minority groups pursuing doctoral study by providing mentorship, networking, research, and scholarly opportunities.

The Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program recently received a $1.3 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education. The program will enroll 13-15 students interested in pursuing a doctorate degree into this upcoming year’s cohort.

Students who are interested can register for an informational session or head straight to the Prospective McNair Scholars site (log in required) to apply.

OLLU secures more than $1.9 million in grants since start of fiscal year

Since the beginning of the fiscal year on June 1, OLLU has secured more than $1.95 million in new grant funding. These awards will be paid out over multiple years and the focus of the funding is on student scholarships and support.

Awards include:

▪ $1,339,205 (over 5 years) from the U.S. Dept. of Education, Ronald E. McNair Postbaccalaurate Achievement Program to support the McNair Scholars Program.

▪ $284,106 (over 3 years) from the National Science Foundation, Improving Undergraduate STEM Education: Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSI Program) to fund the “Supporting Persistence by Increasing the Relevance of Algebra to Learning (SPIRAL)” project which aims to improve STEM outcomes among OLLU students.

$250,959 (over 4 years) from the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture, Hispanic-Serving Institutions Education Grants Program to increase recruitment, graduation, and career readiness in food and agriculture sciences by diminishing barriers and prioritizing the inclusion of historically marginalized, underserved populations through a city-wide collaboration of three Hispanic Serving Institutions – OLLU, UTSA and Northeast Lakeview College.

▪ $50,000 from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board to develop an evidence-based First-Second Year Experience program that is rooted in the tenets of IDEA (inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility).

▪ $15,000 from the Ellucian Foundation for the Progress, Accomplishment, Thriving, Hope (PATH) Scholarship Program for students experiencing emergency economic hardship.

▪ $8,150 from the San Antonio-Mexico Foundation for Education for scholarships to expand educational opportunities for Mexican students and those of Mexican origin living in the U.S.

▪ $3,500 from the Consulate General of México for IME-Becas Scholarships to expand educational opportunities for Mexican students and those of Mexican origin living in the U.S.

McNair Scholars working hard in Summer Research Institute

Fourteen OLLU McNair Scholars are conducting rigorous work during a nine-week Summer Research Institute in preparation for the McNair Undergraduate Research Conference, which will be held virtually at UCLA July 27-30.

Since June 1, Scholars have been conducting primary or secondary research on a broad range of topics, spanning from humanities to laboratory research to STEM. 

The McNair Scholars Summer Research Institute is designed to equip the scholars with academic discourse, research experience, graduate school prep, GRE readiness, cultural programming, and professional development.

The McNair Scholars are: junior English major Marissa Antu; sophomore Psychology major Miguel Barrera; junior Criminal Justice major Claudia Garcia; junior Biology major Raul Gutierrez; junior Chemical Biology major Victoria Lambert; junior Psychology major Samantha Martinez; senior Spanish and Mass Communication double major Laura Miguel; junior Marketing major Melanie Padron; senior Communication Sciences and Disorders major Geslyn Rios; senior Psychology major Monzerrath Rodriguez; junior Psychology and Social Work double major Sheccid Rosales; junior Kinesiology major Kaitlyn Salazar; sophomore Chemical Biology major Kelly Salinas; and senior History major Adriana Valdez.
