Hamid Khan, EdD, PE, professor of management, presented the peer-reviewed paper, “Effective development of ‘positive organizational behavior’ as significant student learning outcomes,” at the Academy of Business Research Conference in San Antonio. He was also session chair and discussant of the MIS/ Management session.

 

Upon recommendation by Staff Advisory Council, the President’s Council has approved new summer hours for staff employees effective May 2015 and each summer thereafter. For summer 2015, hours will begin Monday, May 18, through Friday, Aug. 21. Official University hours for offices are posted as Monday-Thursday, 8:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m., and Friday, 8:30 a.m.-noon. Full time employees are expected to work a nine-hour day Monday-Thursday and a four-hour day on Friday.

The total number of hours worked per week for all employees will agree with the employee’s approved weekly hours. If during the summer months, a holiday falls during the week, full-time employees will work 32 hours and receive eight hours holiday pay.

The proposal followed a study by the Staff Advisory Council that looked at summer class hours, traffic flows on Friday afternoons in offices that provide student services, and other colleges and universities. The council’s rationale stated that the policy recommendation was an effort to promote family life and work balance. For the following years, the policy states, ”summer hours will begin each May on the Monday after grades are due (typically one week after May commencement), and will end each August on the Friday before the Residence Halls are open for freshmen and new students.”

Every year, OLLU participates in the United Way Campaign. Money raised by the campaign will help provide support for children, families, and individuals across San Antonio and Bexar County. Last year, OLLU had the highest participation rate of all area higher education institutions with 61 percent. This year, St. Mary’s University has challenged OLLU to see which school will have the highest participation rate.
The deadline to submit pledge forms is Nov. 20.

Forms should be returned to Amelia Guzman, assistant to the vice president for Student Life, in Providence Hall, Room 104.

Hamid Khan, EdD, PE, professor of management, published the peer reviewed proceedings paper, “Implications of organizational behavior class learning outcomes toward authentic leadership development,” in the Proceedings of International Academy of Business and Public Administration Disciplines (IABPAD). He presented this paper at the IABPAD annual conference held in Las Vegas in the session “Curriculum and Students.” He also reviewed papers and chaired the presentations of Education session and Educational Technology session.

The OLLU Staff Advisory Council will be hosting a Halloween Social at Lisa’s Mexican Restaurant on Wednesday from 5-7 p.m. Lisa’s will be providing chips and salsa, and offering 50 percent off appetizers. There will also be other happy hour specials.

Costumes are encouraged.

During the Fall Break, 23 OLLU staff members participated in a volunteer project as part of OLLU Employee Service Day. Employees served at JDRF, a local nonprofit that focuses on fundraising to provide research and supplies to those with Type 1 diabetes. Volunteers helped create banners, runner bags, and thank you letters as well as bringing supplies to the 5K route for the annual fundraiser.

Psychology faculty members Marcela Polanco and Monte Bobele, along with doctoral students Gaby Lopez and Jeanette Spring, participated in the Trek Breast Cancer Awareness Ride on Oct. 12. Also riding with them was Saki Oyama, a faculty member from UTSA.

Psychology faculty members Monte Bobele, Joan Biever, Bernadette Solórzano and doctoral student Laurel Bluntzer-Hawks recently published, “Postmodern approaches to supervision,” in The complete systemic supervisor: Philosophy, context, and pragmatics (2nd Ed), Tom Todd and Cheryl Storm, Eds.

Hamid Khan, EDD, PE, professor of management, published the peer reviewed article, “Teaching effectiveness using emotional intelligence of cognitive, affective and psychomotor behaviors,” in The Competition Forum, (12) 2, 88-102. He presented the paper at the American Society for Competitiveness 2014 Conference, in Washington, D.C. He was also a reviewer of papers and discussant of the Leadership and Performance session.

As the OLLU retirement plan moves over to Transamerica, employees are currently unable to access their accounts. Transamerica will be receiving data from the previous vendors in the coming days and will work diligently to audit and reconcile the data so employees can resume managing their accounts. Access to accounts will be available this week.

The Advancement staff is hosting a Lake Fund Open House Wednesday and Thursday from noon-4 p.m. in Casa Caritas.

The Lake Fund supports the greatest needs of OLLU, especially the 95 percent of students who receive university scholarships. This open house is an opportunity to get to know the advancement staff and make a donation to the Lake Fund.

For each level donated, participants will receive one key to unlock a treasure chest and potentially win a prize. The following is the breakdown of donation levels and number of keys that participants will receive:

• $1-25 – 1 key
• $26-$50 – 2 keys
• $51-$75 – 3 keys
• $76 – $99 -4 keys
• $100 and up 5 keys

Any donation made in this fiscal year is taken into account and keys will be distributed accordingly upon arrival. Gifts of cash, checks or payroll deduction are accepted. Forms will be available during the open house.
