2014-2015 University Convocation next week

University Convocation for faculty and staff is set for Aug. 19 at 10:30 a.m. in Thiry Auditorium. Convocation will kick off OLLU’s 2014-2015 academic year and will include staff, faculty and members of the Board of Trustees. Its focus will include the State of the University, Strategic Plan, and a celebration of the OLLU community. Lunch will be provided following Convocation at noon in Chapel Auditorium.

Special Education scholarship available for graduate students

A scholarship is available for graduate students who have been admitted to the Special Education program. Students who receive the scholarship will receive a $550 stipend for four semesters, textbook and supplies allowance, and will also be able to collect a professional conference stipend.

To be considered for the scholarship, students must:

  • Be admitted into the Master of Arts in Teaching Special Education program
  • Have a cumulative GPA of 3.5
  • Submit a completed application
  • Display a passion for educating diverse learners

Applications are available outside of Moye Hall, Room 300. Deadline to complete applications is Aug. 15.

Employee retirement plan meetings this week

The Human Resources Office will be holding meetings to discuss changes to the 403(b) Retirement Plan today and tomorrow in Main Building, Room 311

Representatives from Transamerica, OLLU’s new retirement plan provider, will be on campus for two days. Staff members are encouraged to attend one of the group meetings. Group meetings are scheduled for the following times:

  • 1 p.m.
  • 2 p.m.
  • 3 p.m.

Aug. 5

  • 9 a.m.
  • 10 a.m.
  • 11 a.m.
  • 1 p.m. (Spanish-only session)
  • 2 p.m.
  • 3 p.m.

 

Employees currently enrolled with TIAA-CREF can schedule a one-on-one meeting with a Transamerica representative to discuss transfer options. These one-on-one meeting will be held today-Friday.

Golfer Christopher Schriedel captures Cimarron Collegiate Open

CollegiateTourSaints golfer Christopher Schriedel captured the Cimarron Collegiate Open after a tie-breaker against teammate Ian Berrigan. The tournament was presented by State Farm Insurance and was part of the Collegiate Players Tour (CPT). OLLU Head Golf Coach Alan Baxter said, “This is quite a feather in the cap for OLLU men’s golf. It’s a prestigious accomplishment, and I am proud of their performances.”  Both Schriedel and Berrigan tied after 54 holes played over two days at the Cimarron Country Club in McAllen, Texas. Schriedel shot a 75-70-72, while Berrigan shot 73-70-74 for a final of 217. As the first and second-place finishers, both have qualified for the CPT National Championship Tournament at The Honors Golf Club of Dallas in Carrollton, Texas. The event will be held Aug. 4-7. Men’s basketball announces signing of four players

MensBasketballNewMembersOLLU announced the signing of four student-athletes to its 2014-2015 men’s basketball squad. Joining the team are Tre Anderson from Dallas; Devin Davis from Arlington; Dav’Vin Hill from Victoria; and Josh Shockey from Haltom City. The Saints finished the 2013-2014 season with a 21-11 overall record and 14-4 in the Red River Athletic Conference. The team lost to the University of St. Thomas in the semifinals of the conference tournament. The Saints, led by second-year head coach Ryan Wall and new assistant coach Amorrow Morgan, will begin their season in November 2014. Read full story online.

OLLU hosting Leadership Development Series for CPS Energy

CPS Group ShotLeaders from CPS Energy recently participated in a month-long development series at OLLU sponsored by the Department of Leadership Studies. The Leadership Development Series is designed to increase each leader’s self-awareness and leadership abilities in areas such as emotional intelligence, strategy and organizational culture.

The first cohort completed the series last month and the second cohort will begin in mid-August.  A total of 250 mid-level and executive leaders will complete the development series over the next year.

“We are excited to partner with CPS Energy on this initiative,” said Dr. Esther Gergen, department chair for Leadership Studies. “This is a great opportunity to showcase our faculty and curriculum with the business community.”

Employee benefits fair this week

Re-enroll, change or end benefits by the deadline

The first of two employee benefits fairs will take place July 29 from 9 a.m.-noon and 1-3 p.m. in Providence Hall, West Social Room. The second fair will take place Aug. 27.

Annual benefits re-enrollment provides employees the opportunity to start, change, or end benefits, which are effective Oct. 1, 2014, with the exception of medical and dependent reimbursement plans, which begin Sept. 1, 2014.

All employees are required to complete a 2014-2015 enrollment form by the deadline listed below if making any plan changes, or if enrolling in medical or dependent reimbursement plans. Enrollment forms will be distributed at the first benefits fair. Any forms not picked up will be placed in the Walter Center mailboxes. Forms will not be accepted after the deadline.

Bi-weekly paid employee deadline is Aug. 6, 2014.

Monthly paid employee deadline is Sept. 5, 2014.
