Join the Center for Women for Women’s History Month movie nights

The Center for Women in Church and Society is hosting two movie nights in celebration of Women’s History Month. Both award-winning films tell stories of how women came together to change the world around them.

band-of-sisters-movie-posterOn Tuesday, “Band of Sisters,” will be shown. The film tells the story of Catholic nuns and their work for social justice after Vatican II of the 1960s. Learn more about the film.

PraytheDevilBacktoHellOn March 25, “Pray the Devil Back to Hell,” will be shown. The film tells the story of ordinary Liberian women — Christian and Muslim — who banded together, prayed, fasted, and protested until they brought an end to Liberia’s civil war. In the film, Leymah Gbowee, one of the movement’s heroines, launches the campaign. Learn more about the film.

Both films will be shown at 9 p.m. in the Library Community Room.

Drama program presents ’13 Ways to Screw Up Your College Interview’

The OLLU Drama department presents its spring production, “13 Ways to Screw Up Your College Interview,” beginning this week.

The one-act comedy follows the story of two college recruiters at a prestigious university who need to fill one last spot to keep their job. In conducting their interviews, the recruiters come across 13 eccentric, dimwitted and slightly insane high school seniors. What seems like a simple task turns into a nightmare when the applicants turn out to be a reality star, a practicing vampire, an amateur magician, and others who are much worse. Each interview hilariously illustrates what NOT to do during a college interview.

Become an ally by attending the Safe Zone/Ally Training

SafeZoneThe Alliance, Worden Social Work Organization and the Social Work 3333 Service-Learners are holding Safe Zone/Ally Training on March 29 from 9:30 a.m.-5 p.m. in Providence Hall, West Social Room.

Safe Zone/Ally Training is a daylong event that is comprised of different workshops that cover an array of topics that are related to advancing improvements amongst the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex (LGBTQI) community, specifically for youth who are in the coming out and discovery process. It is useful for those who work with youth on a daily basis, including counselors, social workers, psychologists, school principals, teachers, family members, etc. The training also teaches participants how to be sensitive and proactive when combating homophobic/transphobic remarks. Overall, this training is meant to educate others how to create safe and supportive spaces for LGBTQI individuals.

The training is free to attend and includes a training manual, breakfast, lunch and an Ally badge.

Mexican American Studies Conference and Student Research Symposium next week

PrintThe Center for Mexican American Studies and Research will be holding its annual conference March 27-28. This year’s theme, “Adding ‘Arts’ to STEM: A Culturally Relevant STEAM” will showcase and promote student and faculty scholarly and creative activities which contribute to a broader and deeper understanding of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) disciplines and how incorporating Arts and Culture can engage more students in these fields of study.

The conference will include a Student Scholarly and Creative Activity Symposium on Thursday, March 27 and the STEAM Professional Development Institute on Friday, March 28. Registration is required for the STEAM Institute.

Women’s basketball will play first round of NAIA tournament at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday

WomensBB3-17(Bracket) (Bracket Selection Show) The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) released the bracket for the 34th Annual NAIA Division I Women’s Basketball National Championship. For the third-straight season, the 32-team, single-elimination national championship will take place from March 19-25 at the Frankfort Convention Center in Frankfort, Ky. OLLU is the No. 3 seed in the upper left quarter of the bracket. The Saints will take on No. 6 seed Talladega College from Talladega, Ala., at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 20. The Saints qualified for the tournament after they captured the regular season Red River Athletic Conference title. Talladega, which is from the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference, qualified as the 10th at-large team. NeuLion, the NAIA’s official video streaming company of select NAIA National Championship events, will be broadcasting the first 30 games from Frankfort. An all-tournament pass (30 games) is available for $24.95, while a single day pass can be purchased for $9.95. OLLU will broadcast the game from the VIP room in UWAC. Xavier Roberson selected to NAIA DI Men’s Basketball All-Star Team and will participate in 3-point contest

Xavier3-14OLLU’s Xavier Roberson has been selected to participate in the 2014 NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball All-Star team and the 3-Point Contest. The NABC-NAIA Men’s Basketball All-Star Game, presented by US Bank, and the NABC-NAIA Men’s Basketball 3-Point and Slam Dunk Contests, presented by Rawlings, will occur on March 22, as part of the Buffalo Funds-NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball National Championship in Kansas City, Mo. Roberson and the men’s basketball team missed qualifying for the national championship by one vote. The Saints finished their season with a 21-11 record and they led the NAIA in scoring offense (100.125), in 3-pointers/game (13.031), in total 3-pointers made (417), in offensive rebounds/game (17.00), in steals/game (14.406), in total steals (461) and in turnover margin (9.844). They finished second in total scoring offense (3204) and in assists/game (633/19.78) and in the top 10 in several more categories. Roberson led the nation in points/game (25.094), in total scoring (803), in 3-pointers made/game (4.750) and in total 3-pointers (152). Go online for full article.

Bernardo Pegas receives second ‘Men’s Tennis Player of the Week’ honors this season

Men'sTennis3-17Bernardo Pegas has been selected as Men’s Tennis Player of the Week for March 9-16. This is Pegas’ second Player of the Week honors this season. Head Coach Sal Castillo said, “Bernardo Pegas is the only player to go undefeated in singles winning all five of his matches. Softball wins one of two against Texas Wesleyan University

Softball3-17The softball team saved a sweep by Texas Wesleyan University after the Saints lost the first game 8-3 and a walk-off hit from Megan Perez in the seventh inning gave the Saints the 4-3 second-game win. The Saints are now 13-5-1 on the season, while the Rams – a member of the Sooner Athletic Conference – move to 10-9.  The Saints will begin their conference schedule today in Langston, Okla., against Langston University.
