OLLU’s Victoria Vazquez and Robert Alexe named conference ‘Offensive Players of the Week’

Victoria Vazquez earned a share of the Red River Athletic Conference Women’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week award for Sept. 2-9. Vazquez, a senior midfielder from Helotes, Texas, compiled two goals and three assists in a 1-0-1 week for the Lady Saints. She scored one goal to help OLLU claim a 2-2 tie against St. Mary’s University before playing a part in four goals in an 8-1 trouncing of Schreiner University (Texas). The Saints stand at 3-0-1 overall. Amaris Tavaris of OLLU was nominated for this week’s defensive award. Read more online.

Robert Alexe was recognized with the Red River Athletic Conference Men’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week award for Sept. 2-8. Alexe, a junior forward from Chicago, booted in a pair of goals and assisted on another as the Saints won their only game of the week, 7-1, over Schreiner University. Alexe got the scoring started with a goal and assisted on OLLU’s second goal to establish a 2-1 lead. The Saints extended the lead from there and climbed to 3-0 on the season. Time to vote for the University Newsletter’s new name

The submissions are in and now it is time for the OLLU community to choose the University newsletter’s new name. Below are the finalists:

OLLU mourns the loss of former professor

OLLU mourns the loss of Sister Virginia Clare (VC) Duncan, CDP, PhD, former OLLU Professor of Education. Sister VC first came to Our Lady of the Lake College to earn her Bachelor of Arts in English. Later, while working on her doctorate at the University of Texas at Austin, she taught education courses at OLLU. She was a member of the OLLU faculty off and on from 1964 to 1983.

After leaving OLLU, Sister VC became director of Physical Facilities at the Convent, did pastoral work and teaching in Louisiana, and served as the first Director of Development for the Congregation of Divine Providence. She retired in 1996 after 56 years of religious service.

The Rosary is Wednesday, Sept. 11 at 4 p.m. and the Wake is at 6:30 p.m. A Memorial Service will be Thursday, Sept. 12 at 2 p.m. All services will be in Annunciation Chapel at Our Lady of the Lake Convent Center.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made to the Sisters of Divine Providence, 515 S.W. 24th Street, San Antonio, Texas 78207.

 

Cultural Focus on Puerto Rico at the IFCC

Experience the food and dancing of Puerto Rico, Friday, Sept. 13 from 7-9 p.m. at the International Folk Culture Center (IFCC).

A $5 donation is requested for the evening to help cover the food. Anyone who would like to help prepare the meal may eat for free. Dinner preparation will begin at 1 p.m. on Friday.

Dinner will be served from 7-8 p.m., and members of Ballet Folklorico Boriken will teach the dances of Puerto Rico.

OLLU Benefit Bash for Men’s Basketball and Golf

Throughout the year, OLLU will host a series of fundraising events to benefit the OLLU men’s and women’s athletics teams. The first event of the year is the OLLU Benefit Bash for Men’s Basketball and introducing new Men’s Golf Coach Alan Baxter on Wednesday, Sept. 11. Special guests include President Jane Ann Slater and Board Chair Roy Terracina.

Saints cross-country team fundraiser ends Sunday

OLLUCCGearFundraiserThe OLLU Cross-Country Teams have partnered with Lids Team Sports to sell OLLU gear to the public. Funds raised will support the teams in their travels throughout Texas and various states throughout the country. Cross-Country Coach Stephen Sherman said, “The selections we are offering are attractive and each honors OLLU’s brand and spirit. We hope the OLLU community will support us by purchasing these items for themselves and for their family.” The fundraiser concludes Sunday, Sept. 15. Go online for more information.

OLLU women’s soccer ties one, wins one and loses one over the weekend

OLLU women’s soccer team tied the Rattlers from St. Mary’s University 2-2 at the OLLU Soccer Field Thursday night. The Saints came back from being down 0-2 and junior forward Stephanie Diaz tied the game with only eight seconds left in the second half. After a 45-minute lightning delay and two overtime periods, the scored remained at 2-2. Read more online.

Freshman Amaris Tavares and her hat trick led the team to an 8-1 win over NCAA Division III Schreiner University on Friday afternoon. The win moves the Saints to 3-0-1, while Schreiner drops to 0-3. Read more online.

In the last of three games in the week, the Saints faced NCAA DI University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) for the first time ever. Despite a tough battle, the Saints fell 1-0 to the Cardinals. OLLU is now 3-1-1 on the season.

OLLU women’s cross-country ran their first meet of the season as a team when they competed in the 2013 Bill Libby Invitational, hosted by McMurry University, at Nelson Park in Abilene, Texas. The team finished in seventh place out of eight teams with a total time of 1:48:55.39. Head Coach Stephen Sherman had high expectations on his team after last year’s meet in Abilene. “I was disappointed we didn’t run as a team as well as we did here last year, but it is certainly nothing that we are worried about.” Read more online.

OLLU men’s cross-country ran its second meet of the season when three runners participated in the 2013 Bill Libby Invitational hosted by McMurry University at Nelson Park in Abilene, Texas. Freshman Jonathan Yanez (pictured at right) was the first Saints runner and 20th overall to complete the 8000m around Nelson Park with the time 28:09.44. Read more online.
