Scholarships for students available

The San Antonio branch of the American Association of University Women is offering $2,000 graduate student scholarships as well as $500 textbook scholarships. Textbook scholarships are open to undergraduate and graduate students. To view application requirements, click here.

The Emma Freeman Memorial Scholarship is awarded to individuals who are legally blind, have a 2.5 GPA or higher and would like to attend an accredited college or university. For more information, contact Angela Gray-Eagle at 210-533-5195, or visit the San Antonio Lighthouse for the Blind website.

Schedule of Biliterate Certificate capstone presentations

The OLLU community is invited at attend the Biliterate Certificate and Spanish capstone presentations Dec. 3 from noon-1 p.m. in the Library, Room 103. All presentations will be in Spanish. The schedule is as follows:

Psychology students and alumni visit Chile for immersion experience

Chile_2During the first week of November, OLLU psychology department students and alumni, along with the master’s program director, traveled to Santiago, Chile, for an educational and immersion experience. The group was hosted by the Diplomado en Psicoterapia Sistémico Narrativa Infanto-Juvenil at the Faculty of Social Science, Universidad de Chile. The coordinators welcomed the group into their clinical training facility and classroom activities for a rich training experience on their systemically oriented program. Marcela Polanco, OLLU’s master’s program director, also offered a one-day workshop for the Chilean students on a Latin American perspective of narrative therapy as a therapy of solidarity.

OLLU students participate in Make a Difference Day

make a difference dayMore than 90 students participated in OLLU Make a Difference Day at the San Antonio Food Bank on Oct. 25. Volunteers had the chance to help prepare the fruit and vegetable gardens, pack non-perishable foods into boxes, and perform other helpful tasks. The vOLLUnteers were able to pack over 800 boxes. OLLU Make a Difference Day is coordinated by the vOLLUnteer Unity Council and the Center for Service-Learning and Volunteerism (CSLV).

Spring 2015 early registration begins today

Beginning today, students will be able to register for spring 2015 courses. Early registration runs online 7 a.m.-midnight, and in person (at the Registrar’s Office) 9 a.m.-6 p.m.

The schedule for early registration is as follows:

  • Today – Seniors, Master’s and Doctoral Students
  • Tuesday – Juniors, Seniors, Master’s and Doctoral Students
  • Wednesday – all currently enrolled students
  • Thursday – all current and new students

28 students receive President’s Volunteer Service Award

Twenty-eight OLLU students have earned the President’s Volunteer Service Award.

The President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation was established in 2003 to recognize the contributions volunteers are making in their communities. The Council created the President’s Volunteer Service Award program as a way to honor Americans who inspire others to engage in volunteer service.

The honor is awarded to those who have completed at least 100 hours of service within a year. The award is given at the bronze, silver and gold levels. The bronze medal is awarded to those who complete 100-174 hours, the silver medal is awarded to those who complete at least 175 hours, and the gold medal is awarded to those who complete 250 hours or more. Recipients receive a medal, a personalized Certificate of Achievement, a letter from the President of the United States and a letter from the President’s Council.

To earn the President’s Volunteer Service Award, a student must complete at least 100 community service hours approved by the Center for Service-Learning and Volunteerism (CSLV) between June 1, 2013 and May 31, 2014.

To get hours tracked by the CSLV, a student must submit a Request for Project Service Approval. Once the project has been approved by the CSLV, they will begin entering hours into the tracking database. The CSLV will track approved projects for all students even if they are not working toward the award.

Get a ride to the Polls for Early Voting on Thursday

Community members who need a ride to the Las Palmas Library voting location will be able to get a ride on Thursday at 12:30 p.m. In order to vote, make sure to bring a state or federal ID (driver’s license, state ID card, military ID card, passport). Those who need a ride should meet in front of Main Building.
