The President’s Convocation for faculty and staff will take place Aug. 9 at 10:30 a.m. in Thiry Auditorium. It will be followed by a lunch in Chapel Auditorium.
Convocation marks the official opening of the 2022-2023 academic year. The newly updated Mission, Vision and Value statements will be introduced during the event. President Abel A. Chávez will share his vision for carrying the university Mission into the future.
The Convocation Luncheon will take place in Chapel Auditorium immediately following the presentations in Thiry. To assist with the lunch order, faculty and staff are asked to RSVP no later than Thursday, Aug. 4 at this link: https://forms.office.com/r/gWnvAxW636.
The OLLU community is invited to take part in the combined Spirit Day/Convocation event set for Wednesday, Sept. 1, which will be the kick-off to a series of campus events designed to increase connection and communication. The second event, a University Update, will take place on Sept. 8. It will be followed by a series of Campus Conversations throughout September and October.
Spirit Day/Convocation will be held at 11 a.m. in the Mall area. A live stream for Houston and RGV campuses and online students will be available on the University Ministry Facebook page.
Spirit Day/Convocation will include some traditional elements of both events, including the Spirit Day Mass, the recognition of service award recipients and addresses from the presidents of Faculty Assembly, Staff Senate (formerly Staff Advisory) and Student Government Association. It will be followed by a free hamburger lunch.
This year Spirit Day and Convocation are going to be combined into one event held on Sept. 1 beginning at 11 a.m. in the Mall Area. There will be the traditional Mass of the Holy Spirit followed by service awards for employees and the traditional Convocation addresses. The theme for this year is “Living The Legacy,” and CDP Superior General Sister Pearl Cesar will be a keynote speaker.
The Office of the President will be providing lunch, but you must RSVP for the meal. To reserve your free burger meal, you must submit your RSVP by Aug. 27 at noon. Use this link to submit your RSVP: https://forms.office.com/r/iURhrQjAdv
The Center for Disease Control reminds us that if people are vaccinated and wear masks, they can avoid serious infection from new variants of COVID-19. To assist the OLLU community in achieving a healthy start, OLLU is postponing Convocation until Sept. 1.
More details will be forthcoming, but Convocation will follow OLLU’s annual Spirit Day Mass. Weather permitting, all activities will be held outdoors. This will allow everyone to gather in person and start off the year by rebuilding relationships that were altered by communicating through computer screens.
At the same time, there will be no changes to the Provost Professional Development Days schedule and the State of Blue Nation Convocation event for welcoming new students. All are encouraged to attend in person to greet both old and new colleagues. Mask rules remain in place.
Faculty and staff who plan to attend Development Days in person should RSVP to the Office of Academic Affairs to ensure that officials have enough lunches to feed all attendees.
