Men’s Tennis falls to XULA in Unaffiliated Tournament

The NAIA No. 23-ranked OLLU men’s tennis team lost to No. 10-ranked Xavier University of Louisiana (XULA) 4-2 in the championship match at the NAIA Unaffiliated Tournament on April 20.

OLLU was the No. 2 seed in the tournament while the Gold Rush earned the No. 1 seed. The Saints are now 19-8 overall. 

Seven players at the tournament were selected to the All-Tournament Team. Luis Hernandez and Kyllian Savary represented the Saints. Head Coach Dave Watts commented, “This was a really tough match today. The team played their hearts out. There were a few points here and there but ultimately they were the better team today. I was proud of the support they showed each other. The players that were not playing drove nine hours to support their teammates and made a big difference for them on the court. This is a really special group.”

Men’s tennis defeats Texas Wesleyan in LSUA tournament

The No. 23-ranked OLLU men’s tennis squad defeated Texas Wesleyan University (TWU) 4-0 on April 6 to finish play at the LSU-Alexandria (LSUA) Tournament. The Saints jump to 17-7 overall while the Rams fall to 7-4. 

Head Coach Dave Watts said, “The guys did great today. We started off strong in the doubles and got it done on the top three lines of singles. We will try to recover and prepare for our last home match of the year on Friday and the upcoming conference tournament.”

Women’s tennis falls to Shreveport in LSUA tournament

The No. 21-ranked OLLU women’s tennis team lost a close match against LSU-Shreveport (LSUS) 4-3 on April 6 to wrap up play at the LSU-Alexandria (LSUA) Tournament. The Saints are now 12-7 on the season while the Pilots move to 5-4.

Head Coach Dave Watts said, “Today was an absolute thriller of a match. We knew LSUS had improved since last year. We started off with a big doubles point from our line three and one. We lost five of six first sets on the courts for singles. Ana Ossio and Alexandra Mille did a great job coming back to win their singles matches. It all came down to Sofia Gonzalez at line five who came back from down four match points to win the second set. She played her heart out in the third set but lost one or two key points to lose 5-7. I was proud of the way they competed today. I know if we continue to keep playing and fighting to win these matches, the sky is the limit for this team.” 

Men’s Tennis defeats Dallas Baptist for 11th straight victory

The men’s tennis team raced past NCAA D2 Dallas Baptist University (DBU) 6-1 on Friday. The Saints have won 11 straight matches and are now 15-6 overall. The Patriots drop to 13-7. 

Head Coach Dave Watts commented, “The match against DBU was much closer than the score indicated. We had multiple matches go to third set tiebreakers and we got outplayed in doubles. I was proud of how we responded in the singles matches and I thought our guys did a great job of closing out the third set tiebreakers.”

Men’s tennis marks big win over NCAA D3 Trinity University

The OLLU men’s tennis team defeated NCAA D3 Trinity University (TU) 8-1 on Saturday night. The Saints are now 14-6 overall and have won 10 straight matches. The Tigers drop to 8-7 on the season.

Head Coach Dave Watts commented, “The guys did a great job today and there was great support all the way around. Johan Favelin did a great job at line four coming back from down a set to win in a third-set tiebreaker.”

Men’s and women’s tennis teams finish strong at Saints Invite

The OLLU men’s tennis team wrapped up play in the Saints Invite March 15 with a 7-0 win over Lewis-Clark State College (LC). The Saints improve to 13-6 while the Warriors fall to 9-7. The victory pushes OLLU’s winning streak to nine matches.   

Head Coach Dave Watts said, “The guys did a great job today. It was a tough doubleheader and I’m glad we made it through. We will recover for the next two days and it’s back to work on Monday.”

The OLLU women’s tennis squad blanked Missouri Baptist University (MBU) 7-0 on March 15 to finish play at the Saints Invite. The Saints jump to 9-4 overall while the Spartans drop to 8-7. The Saints have won five straight matches. 

Men’s tennis marks 5th straight win in victory over Weatherford College

The OLLU men’s tennis squad downed Weatherford College (WC) 6-1 on March 8. The Saints improve to 9-6 on the season and have won five straight matches. 

Head Coach Dave Watts said, “The guys did a good job today. The conditions were a bit tricky with the wind but they adjusted well. I thought the doubles work that we have been putting in really shined tonight.”

Women’s tennis defeats Weatherford College, 5-2

The OLLU women’s tennis team defeated Weatherford College (WC) 5-2 on March 8. The Saints jump to 7-4 on the season.

Head Coach Dave Watts commented, “The ladies did a great job against a tough team. The doubles is continuing to improve. Angela Pozos Perales and Sofia Gonzalez did a good job at lines five and six in singles. Alexandra Mille did a great job clinching the match. Millie Wileman also did a great job fighting off a match point to win in a third set tiebreak.”

Men’s tennis loses close match to NCAA D1 UTRGV

The men’s tennis team fell short against NCAA D1 the University of Texas-Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) 4-3 on Feb. 24. The Saints are now 4-6 this season.

Head Coach Dave Watts said, “The guys did a fantastic job tonight. Kyllian Savary and Jaroslav Majsajdr did a fantastic job at line one. The line two had a close match, but, unfortunately, we lost the doubles point. David Ekpenyong was the first off the court at line two for singles. The match came down to David Daniel at line four. It was the most exciting match of the season. He saved two match points but came up short 7-5 in the tiebreaker. I was proud of the way he competed and how he handled himself throughout the match.”

Men’s tennis falls to SCAD

The OLLU men’s tennis team wrapped up the Grizzly Invitational on Saturday in a 4-2 loss to Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD). The Saints move to 3-5 on the season. 

Head Coach Dave Watts said, “This was a tough match today against a good team in SCAD. The third line in doubles got the job done, but we couldn’t get it done on the other two lines. We had leads on the singles lines, but SCAD competed very well and came back to win and clinch the match.”
