Men’s basketball storms back to shock LSU-Alexandria

The men’s basketball team rallied to upset Louisiana State University-Alexandria (LSUA) 94-88 on Saturday. The Saints improve to 4-4 overall and 1-1 in Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) play. The Generals fall to 6-4 overall and 0-2 in the RRAC.

History
The Saints were 2-12 against the Generals prior to the game.

Basics
Both teams shot over 50 percent from the field in a shootout on Saturday. Daniel Helterhoff and Ruben Monzon both had 10 points in the first half. The Generals outrebounded in the Saints in the first frame to lead 47-42 at halftime.

The Saints slowly cut the Generals advantage in the second half. They eventually took a two-point lead with 4:20 remaining in the game. OLLU increased the lead to 86-80 after two big free throws from Tommie Law with under a minute left. The Saints stayed disciplined at the free-throw line in the final seconds and won 94-88.

Offensive/defensive standoutss
Law led the Saints with 23 points. Monzon had a team-high 10 rebounds and added 20 points for a double-double. Helterhoff led the team with three assists.

Kashie Natt and Jadarrian Allen led LSUA with 14 points each. Willie Lapoole grabbed a team-high eight rebounds. Jeremy Richard and Desmond McQuain had two assists apiece.

Inside the box
OLLU combined for 34-of-64 shooting for 53.1 percent, 8-of-19 from three-point range for 42.1 percent and 18-of-24 from the free-throw line for 75 percent. LSUA shot 34-of-60 for 56.7 percent, 8-of-21 three pointers for 38.1 percent and 12-of-19 from the free-throw line for 63.2 percent.

The Saints grabbed 24 rebounds while LSUS collected 38. OLLU forced 14 turnovers and committed 15.Up next

Women’s basketball downs LSUA 65-54

The women’s basketball team defeated Louisiana State University-Alexandria (LSUA) 65-54 on Saturday. The Saints improve to 5-3 overall and 2-0 in the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC). The Generals drop to 1-8 and 0-2 in the RRAC.

History
The Saints were 12-1 against the Generals prior to the game.

Basics
The Saints outscored the Generals in all four quarters on Saturday. Natalia Trevino had seven points in a relatively low scoring first half. She also led the team with six rebounds. The Saints closed the half by shooting 43.8 percent from the field in the second quarter.

The Saints pressure defense shined in the second half by forcing 10 turnovers. The Saints were disciplined from the free-throw line all game by shooting 100 percent on 14 attempts. Three Saints players finished with double-digit scoring. OLLU opened conference play this week with two wins.

Offensive/defensive standouts
Michaela Verrett led the Saints with 15 points. Trevino had 10 rebounds and added 11 points for a double-double. She also led the team with seven assists.

Dannah Martin-Hartwick and Jewel Jones led LSUA with 12 points each. Raegan Ojoro grabbed seven rebounds for the Generals. Martin-Hartwick and Alex Harrison led the team with four assists apiece.

Inside the box
OLLU combined for 24-of-47 shooting for 51.1 percent, 3-of-12 from three-point range for 25 percent and were perfect from the free-throw line at 14-of-14. LSUA shot 18-of-51 for 35.3 percent, 9-of-27 three pointers for 33.3 percent and 9-of-13 from the free-throw line for 69.2 percent.

The Saints grabbed 30 rebounds while LSUA collected 21. OLLU forced 19 turnovers and committed 18.
