Men’s cross-country takes ninth conference championship

The men’s cross-country team won the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) Men’s Cross-Country Championships. The event was held at the Windcrest Golf Course.

OLLU secured seven of the top 10 finishers, with Texas A&M University – Texarkana’s (TAMUT) Shea Johnson winning the individual medal and teammate Isaac Cup coming in third. University of the Southwest’s Brendan Curtis finished 10th.

TAMUT came in second in the championship, followed by the University of the Southwest, Xavier University of Louisiana, and Jarvis Christian University.

OLLU senior Joseph Gonzalez was the runner-up with a time of 26:19 in the 8000m. Sabastian Moreno came in fourth with a time of 26:51. In fifth place was Isai Moran with a time of 27:17. In sixth was Jayden Turrubiates with a time of 27:25. Seventh place finisher was Jose Saucedo with a time of 27:42, followed by Kruz Malesich in eighth place with a time of 27:49 and Tony Favella in ninth place with a time of 28:01. These Saints, united in their pursuit of victory, all earned All-Conference honors, showcasing the strong bond and camaraderie within the team.

Other finishers for the Saints include: Vincent Garza, 28:17; Ryan Aldana, 28:46; Andrew Ruiz, 29:03; Jose Perez, 29:17; Robert Rios, 30:35; JoseCarlos Hernandez, 31:04; Marc Castro, 31:43; and Dominic Alonzo, 34:41.

Brett Charlton, in his first year as head coach, also captured Coach of the Year honors.

This marks the men’s ninth championship title in 10 years. The team won the title in 2022 but was disqualified.

After the meet, the Saints honored the Senior Class of 2024 – Joseph Gonzalez, JoseCarlos Hernandez, Kruz Malesich, Diego Moran, Robert Rios and Andrew Ruiz.

What’s next
The men will prepare for the 69th Annual NAIA Men’s Cross-Country National Championship, which will take place Nov. 22 at the Gans Creek Cross-Country Course in Columbia, Miss. This prestigious event will see the best college cross-country teams from across the nation compete for the title.

Men’s cross-country places fourth at OLLU invite

OLLU hosted the ninth annual OLLU Cross-Country Invitational at the Windcrest Golf Course Oct. 12. The men placed fourth in the meet.

Head Coach Brett Charlton commented, “This was a great meet for our cross-country program. We had 11 men’s teams competing. It was the biggest invite in program history. The men who competed today ran extremely well. We rested several of our top five after they had a good showing at the DBU meet last week. This allowed several other guys to try and make a case to run at the conference meet. Severral of our men ran personal bests.”

Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) won the meet with a total of 19 points. The team had the top four players, plus ninth-place, 20th place and 43rd place finishers. Coming in second was University of Texas at Rio Grande Valley, followed by the University of St. Thomas. After OLLU were Angelo State University, Trinity University, Texas Lutheran University, Hardin-Simmons University and Schreiner University.

Leading the way for the Saints was Jayden Turrubiates, for marked a 26:30 in the 8000m for 13th place. In 14th place was Vincent Garza with a time of 26:37, followed by Jose Perez with 26:53, JoseCarlos Hernandez with 27:10, Kruz Malesich with 27:19, Andrew Ruiz with 27:29, Ryan Aldana with 27:40, Robert Rios with 28:39, Robert Rios with 28:39 and Dominic Alonzo with 31:30.

The Saints will get set to host the highly anticipated Red River Athletic Conference Championship Meet on Nov. 1 at Windcrest Golf Course in Windcrest, Texas. The men have won the conference championships nine years in a row. 

Men’s cross-country places second in Saints Collegiate Invite

The men’s cross-country team placed second at the Fifth Annual Saints Collegiate Cross-Country Invite on Oct. 7. The men came in second in 2017 and 2018, third in 2022 and fourth in 2019.

Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) won the event with 37 points. OLLU followed one point behind with 38 points. Trinity University followed with 78, Texas A&M University – Kingsville with 100 and Texas Lutheran University with 116 points.

Kruz Malesich was the Saints’ top finisher with a time of 26:01 in the 8K for seventh place. JoseCarlos Hernandez came in eighth with a time of 26:03. He was followed by Anthony Perez at 26:14, Jose Saucedo at 26:16, Hector Puente at 26:18, Sebastian Moreno at 26:26, Diego Moran at 26:29, Tony Favella at 26:40, Vincent Garza at 27:03, Sigifredo Salinas at 27:25, Amancio Castilleja at 28:01, Jose Perez at 28:05, Ryan Aldana at 28:08, Robert Rios at 28:31, Dominic Alonzo at 28:38, Joshua Veliz at 29:14 and Jair Lopez at 29:26.
