Men’s Tennis Competed at Brother AI Invitational

The men’s tennis team participated in the Brother AI Invitational hosted by St. Mary’s University (StMU) on Sept.6-7. The Saints battled opponents from Schreiner University (SU), Texas Lutheran University (TLU), Lubbock Christian University (LCU), Western New Mexico University (WNMU) and St. Mary’s University. 

David Ekpenyong and Jarosolav Majsajdr won all three doubles matches to win the championship in Flight A, which was the top bracket in the tournament. Ekpenyong also won the Flight 1 singles bracket and finished the tournament with a 6-0 record. Joshua Alarcon won the Flight 6 singles consolation bracket.

Head Coach Dave Watts commented, “We did a good job and I was impressed with how Caleb Olen competed all tournament. He’s improved a lot from last season. The big one for us was David Ekpenyong. He won his top flight singles bracket and beat a lot of top tier NCAA D2 players. He did a great job playing doubles with Jaroslav Majsajdr and they won the doubles Flight A as well. Joshua Alarcon did a great job winning the consolation bracket in Flight 6. The freshmen looked excited to play and they just have to get more experience on the court. This was a positive start to the season.”

Men’s tennis slides by Collin College 4-3

The men’s tennis squad beat Collin College (CC) 4-3 in a close match on Feb. 25. The Saints improve to 5-6 on the season.

Head Coach Dave Watts said, “I’m really proud of the way the team played today. They were tired from the match last night, but they came out with a chip on their shoulders and ready to play. David Daniel and Michael Canales brought great energy at line two doubles. Johan Favelin and Kyllian Savary did a great job in their singles matches. The clinching match was David Ekpenyong playing a very tough line one singles match against a very good player. He was down 5-0 in the third set and made an unbelievable comeback to win 7-5.”

Men’s tennis falls in championship match

The men’s tennis team battled but lost a 4-3 match to Xavier University of Louisiana (XULA) in the championship of the NAIA Unaffiliated Group Tournament. The Saints finish the 2023 spring season with a 14-13 record.

Head Coach Dave Watts commented, “I couldn’t be more proud of our team. The culture that we have been building throughout the year came to fruition today. Every player brought everything they had. The three players who didn’t play brought an unmatched energy that we needed to make it as close as we did. Xavier is a top team in the nation, and we were right there with them. We came up a bit short today, but that’s sports. We made huge progress from the beginning of the season to now. This loss will only add fuel to our fire for next year. Let’s go Saints!”

Men’s tennis races past Austin College 7-0

The No. 23-ranked OLLU men’s tennis program beat Austin College (AC) 7-0 on March 31. The Saints jump to 12-11 while the ‘Roos fall to 1-11.

Head Coach Dave Watts said, “Some of our players who don’t see as much playing time got a great opportunity to play. They did a great job executing.”

Men’s tennis sweeps Loyola

The men’s tennis team won 4-0 over Loyola University New Orleans (LUNO) on Feb. 25. The Saints improve to 10-5 on the season.

Head Coach Dave Watts said, “The men played great today. We started off by winning the doubles and won line one, three and four in singles. It was nice to finish the trip with a win.”

Men’s tennis on a roll, beats Collin College, TWU, DBU

The men’s tennis team downed Collin College 5-2 on Feb. 19. On Feb. 18, the Saints defeated Texas Wesleyan University 4-0, and Dallas Baptist University 4-1.

The Saints are now 8-3 overall. Next up, they will play at LSU-Alexandria on Thursday.

Men’s tennis upsets St. Mary’s 4-3

The men’s tennis team upset St. Mary’s University (StMU) 4-3 on Feb. 11. The Saints jump to 4-3 overall while the Rattlers drop to 5-1. Full results are listed on the Saints Athletics website.

Head Coach Dave Watts commented, “I was really proud of our men’s team. They got down early losing the doubles point but they battled really hard in singles. Johan Favelin, Kyllian Savary and Guido Picasso gave us big wins. It ultimately came down to Enzo Frequelin’s match at the third line, and he came out with a big third set win. The team did a great job supporting each other and brought a ton of energy. This was a great win for the program.”

OLLU MEN’S TENNIS SIGNS EL PASO NATIVE JULIAN MARTINEZ

OLLU men’s tennis program is proud to announce the addition of incoming freshman Julian Martinez. He will join the team for the 2021-2022 season.

Martinez is a native of El Paso, Texas, and will be majoring in finance. He recently graduated from Del Valle High School where he was the men’s tennis varsity captain from 2018-2021. Martinez was also student council president in 2021 and received the Conquistador Award in the same year.

The 6’1″ freshman plays both singles and doubles, and his athletic role model is professional tennis player Rafael Nadal. Martinez’s hobbies include fishing, cooking and reading.

The Saints men’s tennis team enters its 14th season for the 2021-2022 campaign.
