Men’s track and field sets two OLLU records at Rice meet

The men’s track and field team participated in the J Fred Duckett Twilight Invite at Rice University on April 22. The event took place at the university’s Wendel D. Ley Track & Holloway Field.

Head Coach Patrick Torres commented, “Rice is usually a good meet for our distance athletes so watching a few sprint and field event athletes really show out was special. Jose Zarate‘s school record and all the PRs are great momentum coming into our conference meet.”

Significant results include Jonathan Sanchez‘s results in the javelin throw earned him a bid the NAIA  National. He broke his own school record as well as hitting the National “B” standard with a throw of 55.54m.  In addition, Jose Zarate‘s time of 14:56.41 in the 5000m is a school record.

Men’s track and field breaks school records, qualifies for nationals

Members of the men’s track and field team participated in the University of Texas Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays and the Texas State University Bobcat Invitational 2023 this past weekend.

Head Coach Patrick Torres commented, “This was a huge weekend for our men’s team. We secured two more individual “A” standards from Julian Verastegui and Jalen Bell. Another relay qualified for nationals with our 4x400m relay team. It was a very exciting weekend for OLLU track.”

Significant results include NAIA Nationals qualifications for the 4x400m relay team, who had a time of 3:14.30; Jalen Bell in the 100m with a time of 10.41; and Julian Verastegui in the 400m with a time of 48.09. All three were “A” standard marks.

Records broken were from the 4x100m relay team with a time of 40.61 and Jose Zarate in the 10000m with a time of 31:52.84.

Two men’s track and field members qualify for nationals

The men’s track and field team participated in the Charles Austin Classic at Texas State University.

Head Coach Patrick Torres commented, “We had ourselves a weekend. We had many school records fall, two NAIA A-standards, more PRs than I can count, and one athlete hit the time for U-20 World Championship. I’d be surprised if this squad isn’t highly nationally ranked when the ranking begins in April.”

Significant results included an OLLU record set by Jose Zarate in the 5000m with a time of 15:09.45. De’Jon Lewis’ 7.26m mark in the long jump has qualified him for the NAIA Nationals. In addition, Cerrone Thompson’s time in the 400m of 47.41 has also qualified him for the nationals.

Men’s track and field broke school record and placed first in relay

The men’s track and field team won the 4x400m Relay and set a school record at the UTSA Invitational on March 18. OLLU’s participation in this event was the first-ever in school history; the Saints competed against NCAA D1 schools from throughout the country and was the only non-NCAA school at the meet.

Head Coach Patrick Torres commented, “All weather conditions considered, I’m proud of the way we competed. There was a very high level of track and field athletes present at this meet and OLLU athletes held their own.”

What’s next
The Saints will compete next at the Charles Austin Classic hosted by Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas, Friday and Saturday.

Two Saints men set records at Indoor Track and Field’s Hilton Memorial Invitational

The men’s indoor track and field team participated in the University of Houston’s Leonard Hilton Memorial Invitational at the Yeoman Fieldhouse on Jan. 13.

Head Coach Patrick Torres commented, “This meet was an awesome evaluation of what our winter break training looked like away from campus. I’m proud of the school records and overall accomplishments and we’ll take what we learned here and modify our training accordingly.”

Victor Delos-Santos broke the OLLU school record in the shot put with a 11.55 mark. In addition, Jalen Bell set the school’s record in the 60m with a time of 7.04.

Men’s track and field sets multiple school records at Fastrak Collegiate opener

OLLU men’s indoor track and field team participated in the FasTrak Collegiate Opener at the University of Houston on Saturday. De’Jon Lewis (FR/New Orleans, La.) broke an OLLU record in the long jump and Jose Zarate (SR/San Antonio, Texas) did the same in the 3k meter run.

Head Coach Patrick Torres said, “The first meet of the indoor season was great. We were able to get all of our freshmen quality experience racing at the collegiate level. I’m very excited for the rest of the season and today was an excellent opener. I’d like to thank my coaching staff for the excellent work they have been doing.”
