Construction continues on ‘makerspace’ in Metz Hall

Construction continues on the third floor of Metz Hall for makerspace, an area that will  facilitate hands-on active and collaborative experiential learning activities.

A subfloor has been installed in the makerspace. Framing is going up and electrical and plumbing work are in process. Sheetrock installation should begin this week.

Completion is expected in August.

Construction begins today on fourth floor of Metz Hall

Alpha Construction will begin work today on the STEM/Makers lab on the fourth floor of Metz Hall. The work includes demolition, which will produce considerable noise.

Alpha Construction plans to begin work at 5 p.m. today and each day this week through Friday. Work will continue until approximately 4 a.m. the next day. Alpha Construction also plans to work on Saturday during the day and will set up negative air machines in the lab for dust control.

In addition, Alpha will set up a temporary ramp in place at the northwest entry/exit of Metz (facing Casa Caritas) and use it to wheelbarrow debris to a trailer that will be parked just north of the stairs.  The trailer will be hauled away each morning and brought back at 5 p.m.

OLLU new home to Ukrainian School

The Ukrainian School in San Antonio held its grand opening Saturday in Metz Hall. The school, which meets every other Saturday, teaches Ukrainian language and culture to children living in San Antonio and South Texas. Many of the children and their families have been displaced by the war in Ukraine.

Prior to finding a home at OLLU, the families met sporadically in an attempt to ensure that the Ukrainian culture and language is imparted to their children.

The OLLU-Ukrainian School connection was created by District 4 City Councilwoman Adriana Rocha Garcia, PhD, who is the European liaison for the City of San Antonio and also an OLLU professor of marketing. She, along with OLLU President Abel A. Chávez, MBA, PhD, were present Saturday to welcome the Ukrainian School to its new home on the OLLU campus.

Olenka Bravo, one of the organizers of the Ukrainian School, led a ribbon cutting ceremony for the new school and thanked the university for providing a home base for the school.
