Keelin Garrity wins conference defensive player of the week

Keelin Garrity (SR/West Hartford, Conn.) was selected as the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) Men’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week for Sept. 20-26. This is the fifth set of conference awards for the 2021 men’s soccer season. Garrity led the Saints to two shutouts last week. The senior goalkeeper from West Hartford, Conn., kept LSU Shreveport under control in a 1-0 victory, and he had three saves in a 4-0 blanking of Texas A&M University-Texarkana. OLLU opened the conference season at 2-0 and evened its record at 3-3 overall. 

Haller and Strzelczyk earn volleyball conference awards

Cassidy Haller earned recognition as the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) Volleyball Attacker of the Week for Sept. 20-26. Madelynn Strzelczyk added her fourth RRAC Setter of the Week award for the same dates. This is the fifth set of weekly awards for the 2021 RRAC volleyball season.

Haller averaged 3.2 kills per set in a 2-1 week for the Saints. The sophomore right side from Cibolo, Texas, hit 13 kills in a 3-0 win over Louisiana College, and she added 10 in a 3-1 loss to Trinity University. Haller posted a .464 hitting percentage and added nine digs. OLLU moved to 4-0 in conference play and 9-3 on the season. 

Strzelczyk delivered big for the Saints again with 9.8 assists per set in two of OLLU’s matches. The sophomore setter from Marion, Texas, compiled 69 assists, including 44 in the losing effort against Trinity. Strzelczyk is ranked 16th nationally with 10.3 assists per set.

OLLU’S Ballesteros and Strzelczyk earn conference volleyball player of the week awards

Sadie Ballesteros was selected as the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) Volleyball Attacker of the Week for Sept. 13-19. Madelynn Strzelczyk collected the RRAC Setter of the Week honor for the same dates. This is the fourth set of weekly awards for the 2021 RRAC volleyball season.

Ballesteros posted a .388 hitting percentage in a 3-0 week for the Saints. The junior outside hitter from Atascosa, Texas, had totals of 11 kills in a 3-2 win over Texas Lutheran University (TLU) and nine in a sweep of Wiley College. Ballesteros averaged 2.4 kills per set for the week and chipped in eight digs. She is 14th nationally with a .360 hitting percentage. OLLU opened conference play at 2-0 and improved to 7-2 on the season. 

Strzelczyk earned her third award of the season with 105 assists for the Saints. The sophomore setter from Marion, Texas, reached 51 assists against TLU and 34 against Wiley. Strzelczyk averaged 10.5 assists per set for the week. She is currently 15th in the NAIA with 10.4 assists per set.

Volleyball sweeps Red River Athletic Conference weekly awards

Kalani Ketchens (SR/San Antonio, Texas) claimed the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) Volleyball Attacker of the Week award for March 8-14. Her teammates, Anissa Tamez (SR/San Antonio, Texas) and Alyssa Marquez (JR/Albuquerque, N.M.) were recognized as the RRAC Setter of the Week and RRAC Defender of the Week for the same dates. 

This is the sixth set of conference awards for the 2020 volleyball season, which is typically completed in the fall but was suspended to spring play this year.

Ketchens hammered 27 kills as the Saints swept two home matches against University of the Southwest (N.M.) to earn her second Attacker of the Week honor. The senior outside hitter from San Antonio delivered 11 kills in the first meeting and 16 in the second. For the week, she committed only six errors in 48 total attacks for a .438 hitting percentage. Ketchens averaged 4.5 kills per set. She leads the conference in kills (90) and hitting percentage (.286). OLLU moved to 5-0 in conference play and clinched the RRAC regular-season title. The Saints are 8-1 overall. 

Tamez accounted for 67 assists last week in the USW matches. The senior setter from San Antonio reached 35 assists in the first go-round, and she averaged 11.2 assists per set for the week. The RRAC leader in assists with 236 this season, Tamez collected her third Setter of the Week award of the season. 

Marquez delivered 27 digs on the week for the Saints. The junior libero from Albuquerque, N.M., scooped 16 digs in the second match, and she only had one receiving an error in 23 total chances for the week. A three-time recipient of the Defender of the Week award, Marquez ranks second in the conference with 98 digs. 

Maldonado, Rosser and Strzelczyk earn conference volleyball players of the week

Jaalin Rosser (FR/Killeen, Texas) captured the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) Volleyball Attacker of the Week award for Feb. 22-28. OLLU swept all of this week’s honors, with Madelynn Strzelczyk (FR/San Antonio, Texas) earning RRAC Setter of the Week and Ashley Maldonado (JR/Laredo, Texas) tabbed as RRAC Defender of the Week.

Rosser posted a .409 attack percentage as the Saints swept Jarvis Christian College (JCC) in three sets. The freshman outside hitter from Killeen, Texas, powered home 11 kills on 22 attempts with only two errors. She averaged 3.7 kills per set and added six digs to her stat line. OLLU is now 6-1 on the season. 

Strzelczyk generated 28 assists in the JCC match. The freshman setter from San Antonio averaged 9.3 digs per set and chipped in six digs. 

Maldonado kicked in 10 digs and three assists against JCC. The junior right-side hitter from Laredo, Texas, delivered 3.3 digs per set.
