Women’s basketball defeats Southwest by 63 points

Womens Basketball 1-23-15-2After a phenomenal game Friday night from OLLU’s starters, Saturday’s win belonged to the Saints’ bench as they guided the team to a 108-45 win over the University of the Southwest (USW). The Saints bench scored 67 points. The NAIA’s No. 15 Saints move to 15-4 overall and 9-1 in the Red River Athletic Conference, while Southwest drops to 3-18 overall and 1-9 in conference. OLLU is now tied with Langston University (17-1/9-1) after the Lady Lions suffered their first loss of the season on Saturday. The NAIA’s No. 17 Wiley College defeated the NAIA’s No. 5 ranked team 85-76. The Saints will begin the second half of their conference schedule. They will travel to Louisiana to play LSU-Alexandria (LSUA) on Jan. 30 and LSU-Shreveport (LSUS) on Jan. 31. OLLU community invited to ACE open house

2015aceopenhouseflyerThe OLLU community is invited to an open house for the Academic Center for Excellence (ACE) on Thursday from 9:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m

ACE is comprised of the Mary Francine Danis (MFD) Writing Center, Peer Tutoring Services, and Services for Students with Disabilities, creating a hub of academic and student success resources.

Located on the first floor of the Library, ACE is open to students, staff, faculty, and alumni. It houses open work areas with computers for the MFD Writing Center, Peer Tutoring Services, and Math/SI Lab (coming soon). Twice a week, a retention officer will also be staffed at ACE to assist students.

The official blessing of the center will be from 1-1:30 p.m.

 

Invitation to Human Trafficking Awareness Month event

The Center for Women in Church and Society and the Alumni Office are hosting an engaging talk featuring alumna Kim Van Hooser, founder of Ransomed Life, on Thursday from 12:15-1:15 p.m. in Providence Hall, West Social Room.

Van Hooser will share her story on opening Ransomed Life, a healing community dedicated to the support and recovery of girls, ages 12-18, who are survivors of sexual abuse.

This event is part of Human Trafficking Awareness Month.

Lake Effect – A Cappella Group tryouts this week

Lake Effect, OLLU’s collegiate a cappella group is holding tryouts on Thursday from noon-1:30 p.m. in Fine Arts Building, Room 200.

Students who like singing pop and jazz, or want to join a group like those in the film “Pitch Perfect” are encouraged to try out.

During the audition, those trying out will be able to display their vocal range, sing a part of their favorite pop or jazz song (keep it clean), and read a part of a song with the group.

All voice parts welcome, but the group is especially seeking baritone and bass II.

‘Stay True to Big Blue’ Spring Pep Rally is Thursday

SpringPepRally1Saints Athletics will host the annual “Stay True to Big Blue” Spring Pep Rally on Thursday, Jan. 22 during the community hour from 12-1:30 p.m. Jay Tope will emcee and introduce all the spring sports, as well as those teams who finished their seasons last semester. Saints fans will have the opportunity to get men’s and women’s basketball posters autographed by team members. In addition, free Saints gear and food will be available while they last. All of the OLLU community is invited to join the festivities in the Mall Area.

#GOBIGBLUE-Out games are this Friday

GoBigBlueOut2The annual #GoBigBlue-out basketball games will take place on Friday at 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Saints fans will have the opportunity to win prizes for most spirit during each game. Rally towels will be given away, while they last. Food and Saints gear will also be available, while they last.

Men’s basketball defeats Jarvis Christian in RRAC game


MBB1-20-15-1The No. 11 men’s basketball team’s unbeaten streak continues after defeating Jarvis Christian College (JCC) 76-64 on the road in a Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) game. With the win the Saints improve to 12-1 overall and 7-0 in conference. The Bulldogs fall to 4-8 overall and 2-5 in the RRAC. OLLU jumped out in front in the first period after knocking down 57 percent of its shots. JCC was only able to sink 10 field goals. The Bulldogs improved in the second half posting a better shooting percentage than the Saints at 35 percent, but it was not enough as the Saints held on to secure their seventh conference win. The Saints will return to action at home this evening when they welcome conference rival Huston-Tillotson University to Mabee Gymnasium. The game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

Women’s basketball gets tough win against Jarvis


WBB1-20-15-1The Saints women completed its North Texas road trip with an 81-62 win over Jarvis Christian College. The Saints move to 6-1 in the Red River Athletic Conference and 12-4 overall, while Jarvis dropped to 2-10 overall and 1-6 in conference. The Saints improve to one game behind first-place Langston University (15-0/7-0) and one-and-a-half games ahead of Wiley College (9-2/4-2). The Saints led by one point in the half, but Jarvis played a better game. They kept the Saints to 34 percent shooting from the field and allowed the NAIA’s eighth leading 3-point shooting team to 17 percent from 3-point range. Conversely, the Lady Bulldogs shot 41 percent from the field, including 33 percent from 3-point range. But halftime proved to be a catalyst for OLLU. The team came back to hold the Lady Bulldogs to 25 points, while scoring 43 in the second period. The Saints will play their next three conference games at home. On Tuesday, Jan. 20, the Saints will host Huston-Tillotson University (HTU) (4-10/3-3), and on Friday, Jan. 23, the Saints will host the University of St. Thomas (7-9/3-4). The following day, the Saints will host the University of the Southwest (2-15/1-6).
