Women’s basketball overpowers Texas College with 107-57 win


WomensBballvsTexasCollegeThe women’s basketball team continued its dominance on the court after its fourth 38-plus win in eight days. The Saints’ 107-57 win over Texas College moves them to 13-1 overall and 4-0 in the Red River Athletic Conference. Texas College drops to 0-18 overall and 0-7 in conference. Head Coach Christopher Minner said, “I thought we played with good intensity, plus we won the rebounding battle and our energy level stayed the same. Everyone knows we can shoot and press, so the key for us to win is to get those rebounds.” Every player on the Saints squad saw court time, and everyone put points on the board with Bayliss leading at 19 points including 6-of-15 from the field, 5-of-8 from 3-point range and 2-of-2 from the charity stripe. Nashae Owens followed with 16 points, five assists and two steals. Electra Roberts scored 12 points, while Sequestiny O’Neal finished with 10. Ornela Bacchini finished with 14 rebounds and nine points. The team shot 43 percent from the field, 32 percent from 3-point range and 80 percent from the free-throw line. They forced 36 turnovers while committing 22. The Saints will play their next game on the road in Austin tonight. OLLU Big Blue Podcast: Coach Sherman talks about adding track and field to his duties

Martin also partners with Michael Thompson, the Voice of the Saints, to discuss the week’s competitions. Michael is the play-by-play announcer for Saints basketball and volleyball. Women’s soccer signs three freshmen to 2014 squad


shield_ollu_womens_socr_blkThe women’s soccer team and Head Coach Arthur Salazar announced the signing of three freshmen to its 2014 squad. Carolina Aguilar from Spring, Texas; Grayson Manfredo from Round Rock, Texas; and Maggie Miller from Manhattan, Kan. signed letters of intent on Monday at the University. The Saints are coming off their best season ever after finishing with a 16-3-1 overall and 6-0 conference record. The team won the Red River Athletic Conference Regular Season and the Conference Tournament for the first time since beginning competition in 2008. The Saints qualified for the NAIA regional tournament, where they lost to Concordia 1-0. At the conclusion of the season, the Saints received a No. 19 ranking in the 2013 NAIA Women’s Soccer Coaches’ Preseason Top 25 Poll. The team will begin its season in August of 2014. Inaugural BLUE OUT to take place at Friday’s basketball games

BlueOutPromotionsThe University will hold its Inaugural BLUE OUT on Friday beginning at 5 p.m. to promote the women’s and men’s basketball games against Jarvis Christian College. Free limited edition t-shirts will be given out to those who come to the women’s game, which takes place at 5:30 p.m., while supplies last. During the women’s game, attendees will have the opportunity to win a Kindle Fire, Saints Basket and various gift cards. During the men’s game, which begins at 7:30 p.m., fans will have the chance to win an iPad Mini, a Fit Bit Wrist Band and various gift cards. In addition, one student with the most spirit (both games) will win a $50 movie pack. One student group with the most spirit (both games) will win a pizza party. Winners must be present at both games and will be announced at end of men’s game. Students and groups must register by Wednesday with Liz Longoria at elongoria@ollusa.edu to participate. Reminder that all students, staff and faculty must show their ID to get free admission to the games. Admission for children, 7-17, is $3 and for alumni and adults, 18-older, is $5.

Join OLLU during the Martin Luther King Jr. March on Monday

The OLLU community is invited to participate in one of the country’s largest Martin Luther King Jr. marches, Monday beginning at 9:30 a.m. in front of the MLK Academy. San Antonio’s annual MLK March is organized by the MLK, Jr. Commission to pay tribute to Dr. King. It is the conclusion of a week of educational, inspirational and celebratory events across the city known as “DreamWeek.”

For those who wish to attend, a bus is being provided by the Institutional Advancement Office to transport people from OLLU to the beginning of the route and back to OLLU after the March. The bus will hold 32 people, and is first come, first served. The bus will be at OLLU at 8:30 a.m. and will return at 1:30 p.m.

To sign up to ride the bus, visit the Center for Service-Learning and Volunteerism (CSLV) in the Worden School, Room 23. If there is not enough room on the bus for everyone who wishes to attend, there will also be carpooling available at 8:30 a.m. in front of the Worden School. Those who wish to meet at the March can look for the OLLU banner at the beginning of the route at 9:30 a.m.

Students who participate in the March can earn service hours through the CSLV. Hours will begin at 10 a.m. and run through the end of the March (approximately 2.25 hours).

HALO students can earn three HALO points for participating in the March.
