OLLU announced the signing of its first members of the inaugural men’s baseball team that will begin competing in the spring of 2015. Signing letters of intent last week were Darius Patton from San Antonio, Texas and Jacob “Jake” Simmons from La Porte, Texas. Both will start at OLLU in the fall of 2014. Head Coach Freddy Rodriguez said, “This is a historic day for the University and an exciting time for me as we sign our first-ever baseball student-athletes. Soccer teams to hold summer league for high school boys and girls
The soccer teams will hold their annual summer league for high school boys and girls. Nine boy’s teams will participate, while 13 girl’s teams have signed up. The summer league for boys begins tomorrow, while the girl’s league begins on June 16. Schools participating include Burbank, Edison, Harlandale, Highlands (2), Medina Valley, Memorial, Sam Houston and Southwest on the boy’s side and Brackenridge, Brennan (2), Harlandale (2), Highlands, Holmes, Kennedy, Lanier, Memorial, Pleasanton, South San, Southwest and Warren on the girl’s side. Volleyball camp begins next week
The OLLU volleyball team will hold its annual summer camp for beginners and intermediate players. Dates for the two separate sessions are June 16-20 and July 28-Aug. 1. The camp on Monday-Thursday will be from 9-11 a.m., lunch from 11 a.m.-noon and again from 12-2 p.m. On Friday, the camp will run from 9-11:30 a.m. Admission is $160, or $140 if the camper brings a friend, sibling or teammate. Walter named director of Center for Women
Jacqueline L. Walter, MA, begins her new position as director of the Center for Women in Church and Society (CWCS) today. Walter earned a Bachelor of Arts in Religious Studies from OLLU and a Master of Arts in Theology from Oblate School of Theology. In 2011, she returned to OLLU as the program coordinator for the CWCS. She has 25 years of experience in ministry. Walter is passionate about empowering women as community leaders and committed to social justice and service.
OLLU Men’s Club Basketball Camp to be held next week
The OLLU Men’s Club Basketball team will hold its summer camp June 9-13 from 9:30 a.m.-noon. The camp is open for children ages 9-15. Admission is $50, or $40 for children of OLLU community members or active-duty/retired military servicemembers. The cost is also $40 per child if the camper brings a friend.

Sembradores continue scholarship fund
The members of Sembradores of San Antonio Educational Foundation added another $11,000 to an endowed scholarship fund that benefits OLLU students. The group visited campus last week for a check presentation. The Sembradores began the fund in 1985 and continue to add to it each year, increasing the amount of scholarships funded every academic year. Scholarships are awarded to full-time OLLU students who reside in the San Antonio area who have completed a minimum of 30 academic hours. More than 40 OLLU students have benefited from the generosity of the Sembradores Foundation.
Employees participate in the San Antonio Sports Corporate Cup
More than 50 OLLU employees participated in the San Antonio Sports Corporate Cup hosted by H-E-B. The event brought employees from more than 70 organizations together for a day of fitness, friendly competition and employee camaraderie. Team members participated in events such as the tug of war, 3-point shootout, 5k, sack race, soccer kicks, golf chipping, 3v3 basketball tournament and more. The OLLU team came in eighth place in its division.
Katrisha Arocha named to NAIA Softball All-America Honorable Mention Team
The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) announced the 2014 Softball All-America teams, selected by the NAIA All-America committee. The All-America teams are comprised of First Team, Second Team and Honorable Mention selections. Our Lady of the Lake University’s Katrisha Arocha is a Honorable Mention selectee, marking the first time in history that a Saints’ softball player has been chosen as a member of the All-America Team. Arocha, a junior pitcher from San Antonio, was selected as the Red River Athletic Conference’s Newcomer of the Year and Pitcher of the Year and was selected to the All-Conference First Team. She is ranked the top 10 in the NAIA in wins (26), total batters struck out (244) and in opponent batting average (.181); in the top 20 in batters struck out per 9 innings (8.94), hits allowed per 9 innings (4.58), total innings pitched (191.000) and in ERA (1.540). She led the conference in ERA, opponent batting average, innings pitched, batters struck out/game, hits allowed/game, runs allowed/game (55/1.41), earned runs allowed (42), wins and saves. Brittany Stone receives Daktronics-NAIA Softball Scholar Athlete Award
The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) announced last week that 297 softball student-athletes have been named 2014 Daktronics-NAIA Softball Scholar-Athletes. Our Lady of the Lake University’s Brittany Stone, a junior from Helotes, Texas, was selected. In order to be nominated by an institution’s head coach or sports information director, a student-athlete must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale and must have achieved a junior academic status. Stone is a graduate of O’Connor High School. She is majoring in Biology and Chemistry, and she finished the 2013-2014 school year with a 3.51 GPA. Earlier this month, Stone was selected to the CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-Region Team. No other member of the Saints’ softball team has ever won either one of these prestigious academic awards.
