OLLU to host ‘West Side to the West Wing’ on Thursday
OLLU is hosting the event, “West Side to the West Wing,” featuring Felicia Escobar Carrillo, special assistant to President Obama on immigration policy, on Thursday at 5 p.m. in Thiry Auditorium.
Raised on the West Side of San Antonio, Escobar now works in the White House as a senior policy director for immigration. During the event, she will participate in a student-led interview and provide an inspiration message to students. A panel discussion on the current state of immigration in the United States will follow. Panelists include, Elaine Ayala from the San Antonio Express-News; Ezequiel Peña, PhD, director of the Center for Mexican American Studies and Research; Aimee Villarreal, PhD, Mexican American Studies professor; and Jonathan Ryan, JD, executive director of the Refugee and Immigrant Center for Education and Legal Services (RAICES).
A reception will follow in the Mall Area.
Sister Nagy wins award from Government of Japan
Sister Margit Nagy, PhD, professor of history, is the recipient of the “Order of Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon” from the Government of Japan. She was presented with the award in recognition for her service in the promotion of the mutual understanding between Japan and the United States.
After becoming interested in modern Japanese history when she was an OLLU student, Sister Nagy received a Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Grant in 1976 to do dissertation research in Japan and was affiliated with Waseda University. She conducted postdoctoral research at the University of Tokyo School of Law as a Fulbright Visiting Professor from 1984-1985.
Sister Nagy has a history of promoting Japan-U.S. relations in San Antonio. She established a course in modern Japanese history at OLLU in 1984. She has also presented lectures and courses on Japan at St. Mary’s University and the University of St. Thomas to offer opportunities for students throughout Texas to learn about Japan’s history. Sister Nagy has written numerous research papers on Japan’s society and has presented her research at conferences and symposiums. She is also a founding member of the Japan America Society of San Antonio and served as its second president for two years.
More recently, Sister Nagy coordinated an event to celebrate the Centennial Commemoration of the Japanese Monument at the Alamo that was donated in 1914 as a goodwill gift from Japanese professor and world traveler Dr. Shigetaka Shiga.
Recent OLLU graduates awarded Lone Star Emmys
Three recent graduates won Lone Star Emmys Saturday evening. Angélica Casas (BA Mass Communication, Spanish ’15) and Gianna Rendon (’15) won in the News: General Assignment category for their story “Evicted for the Wealthy.”
Casas also won in the News — General Assignment — Light News category for her story “Faithfull Friend.”
David Romo (BA Broadcast Journalism ’13), producer for Univision 41, won along with four of his colleagues in the “Best Newscast in a Medium Market” category for their coverage of a Texas rainstorm and deadly tornado that struck Ciudad Acuña, Mexico.
Classes cancelled Friday for presidential installation; offices to remain open; RSVP extended until Tuesday
In order for the OLLU community to participate in the installation activities for President Melby, classes have been cancelled Friday from 9 a.m.–5 p.m. Classes that meet at 8 a.m. on Friday will be held as scheduled. Faculty should give students alternate assignments to make up for the class time missed on Friday.
Offices directly serving students must remain open, but can operate with a limited staff at the discretion of the vice president of the division.
The deadline to RSVP for the installation events has been extended to Tuesday at 5 p.m. Faculty, staff and students planning to attend the events can RSVP online at www.ollusa.edu/communityrsvp.
For those who cannot attend the installation events, a link to the live stream will be available at www.ollusa.edu/installation.
Parking Lot closures for installation
Campus Police will be closing Lot J (between St. Martin Hall Annex and the Harry Jersig Center) and a portion of Lot B (near the UWAC).
Updated Title IX Policy available online
The President’s Council has passed an updated version of the Title IX Policy. It can be viewed online at www.ollusa.edu/TitleIX.
Important changes to the policy include:
- All OLLU employees are now identified as responsible employees and have the responsibility to report an incident within 72 hours to deputy coordinators.

- Houston Campus – Melinda Kirtley
- Rio Grande Valley campus – Patricia Longoria
- Note: Deputy coordinators are not confidential sources. The only employees who can keep a report confidential are priests and counseling services providers.
Suzanne Patrick, Esq., OLLU’s compliance officer, has been appointed as the Title IX Coordinator. Any questions regarding the Title IX Policy should be directed to Patrick.

Ghosts and goblins to descend on campus Thursday for annual Boo Bash
Area children will be on campus Thursday for the annual Boo Bash celebration. Residence Life hosts the event to create a safe Halloween event for neighborhood children who are invited to trick-or-treat in the residence halls. There is still time to donate candy for the event. Donation boxes are available throughout campus.
