Men’s basketball surges to 8-0 record with win over Jarvis

The men’s basketball team continued its undefeated season by racing past Jarvis Christian University (JCU) 96-86 on Nov. 23. The Saints improve to 8-0 overall and 4-0 in the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC). The Bulldogs fall to 2-5 overall and 2-2 in conference.

History
The Saints were 21-7 against the Bulldogs. Last season the Saints split the series losing the first game 70-73 and winning the second one 78-70.

Basics
The Saints shot 50 percent from the field in the first half and had two players with double digits. Trey Law totaled 11 points and Trevon Dennis had 13. Rob Gil created two turnovers, and the Saints hit 19-of-22 free throws. They scored 51 points in the half while the Bulldogs marked 42. The teams combined for 24 fouls and the Saints finished the frame with nine assists.

Jarvis shot better in the second half, but the Saints were able to keep up. Lonzo Rand and Kenyon Elliott had eight points apiece and both teams committed seven turnovers. The Bulldogs shot 40 percent from three-point range but were only able to get to the charity stripe three times. The Saints won by 10 points to remain undefeated. The Saints had 26 points off turnovers, which doubled the amount JCU was able to gather.

Offensive/defensive standouts
Elliott led the Saints with 16 points, followed by Law with 15. Four different players had four rebounds each. Wahkil Lopez led the squad with five assists.

Jarvis was led by Caleb Thompson with 17 points. Jorden Clark led the squad with five rebounds. Three different players had two assists apiece for the Bulldogs.

Inside the box
OLLU combined for 34-of-64 from the field for a percentage of 53.1. They shot 6-of-23 from three-point range for 26.1 percent and hit 22-of-27 free throws for 81.5 percent. Jarvis shot 33-of-61 for a percentage of 54.1, 8-of-25 three-pointers for 32 percent and 12-of-16 free throws for 75 percent. OLLU added 29 rebounds to JCU’s 25, while the Bulldogs committed 15 turnovers, and OLLU had 14.

Women’s basketball dismantles Jarvis 100-70

The women’s basketball team scored triple-digit points in a convincing 100-70 victory over Jarvis Christian University (JCU) on Saturday. The Saints jump to 4-3 overall and 2-2 in the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC). The Bulldogs are now 0-5 overall and 0-4 in conference.

History
This was the first time the Saints have scored 100 points or more since 2020. The Saints ae 28-4 against the Bulldogs. Last season, the teams split with OLLU losing the first game 68-63 and winning the second one 62-52.

Basics
The Saints started strong by shooting 45 percent from the field in the first quarter. Both teams struggled from three-point range but the Saints forced six turnovers. They added 26 points in the second quarter and Carlea Owens had 15 points at the break. The Bulldogs shot 22.2 percent in the second quarter and the Saints didn’t allow a three-pointer. OLLU led by 22 points at halftime.

OLLU carried the momentum into the third quarter. Julia Plata hit three buckets from beyond the arc for nine points. Isabella Jaramillo assisted on three plays. The Saints scored 25 points in the quarter. The Bulldogs improved in the fourth quarter by scoring 30 points, but the deficit was too large to overcome. The Saints finished with 100 points, which is the most in a game since 2021. OLLU had 44 points in the paint and 20 points off turnovers.

Offensive/defensive standouts
Plata led the Saints with 22 points and four other players finished with double digits. Jaramillo and Alexandra Westerdijk Martin assisted on seven plays apiece. Owens grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.

Jacy Reese led Jarvis with 16 points. Taylor Gordon totaled eight rebounds and Raniya White had four assists.

Inside the box
OLLU combined for 38-of-67 shooting for 56.7 percent, 13-of-32 from three-point range for 40.6 percent and 11-of-13 from the free-throw line for 84.6 percent. Jarvis shot 23-of-75 for 30.7 percent, 2-of-13 three-pointers for 15.4 percent, and 22-of-33 from the free-throw line for 66.7 percent.

The Saints grabbed 35 rebounds, while JCU collected 39.

Volleyball wins conference series against Jarvis

The volleyball team faced a tough Jarvis Christian University (JCU) Bulldogs on Oct. 4 taking the match to a full five sets for the win. The Oct. 5 match was significantly more subdued as the Saints won 3-0. The two wins move the Saints to 11-7 overall and 4-1 in the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC). JCU drops to 10-8 overall and 3-5 in conference.

History
The Saints are 25-0 against the Bulldogs. OLLU swept the Bulldogs in all but three matches.

Match one
The Saints played an energetic JCU team, just sneaking by the Bulldogs in the first set, 25-22. The Bulldogs tallied nine kills on 22 attacks in the opening game, while the Saints had 19 kills on 39 attacks.

The second set was more of a breeze for the Saints, winning 25-12. They added 13 kills, while limiting the Bulldogs to just four with a hitting percentage of -.065.

Both teams were evenly matched in the third set, each contributing 15 kills. The Bulldogs fought throughout to secure the third-set win 25-22.

The fourth set was a similar story as the third with the Saints getting 14 kills and Jarvis tallying 11. The Bulldogs were relentless and won 25-23 forcing a tie-breaker set five.

The Saints and Bulldogs kept going back and fourth, but OLLU was able to come out ahead to win 15-12 to secure the match, 3-2.

Camila Ramirez led the offense with 20 kills on just eight errors in 50 total attacks. She also added seven digs and a block. Mia Francis tallied 18 kills on two errors in 31 total attacks, while Anais Velasquez recorded 11 kills. Tina Trevino finished with 27 digs. Lauren Reynard added four service aces.

Head Coach Scott Mattera commented, “This match was certainly a test of our mental game – there were so many opportunities to give in to the myriad of distractions that environment provided and it almost got the best of us. Some great play from our outsides came through and preserved the win. Cami with 20 kills and Francis with 18 and only 2 errors was enormous. Lauren with 45 assists while running 6-2 (2 setter offense) is a crazy high number!”

Match two
The Saints started the second match with three straight points, but the feisty Bulldogs came back to tie at 3-3. The teams tied again at five, seven, eight, nine and 10 before Mia Francis started the four-point rally. She added a kill and served to two attack errors from Jarvis. Two consecutive kills from Camila Ramirez gave the Saints the 16-14 lead. The momentum stayed with the Saints through the rest of the set and Victoria Urbanczyk scored the final point on a kill to win 25-20.

The Saints continued to dominate in the second game. Lauren Reynard’s serve scored four points to begin. OLLU Went up 12-4 after kills from Anais Velasquez. The Bulldogs finally got to double digits after a Saints error moved the game to 16-10. Carly Dossett’s serve at 23-17 allowed Mia Francis to get a kill, and Dossett closed the game with an ace to win 25-17.

The Bulldogs put up a lot of energy to begin the third set as they went up 5-0. The Saints trailed until they tied the score at nine. From that point on, the Saints held the lead to win 25-18.

Reynard tallied 29 assists, while Tina Trevino recorded 25 digs. Camila Ramirez led on offense with 14 kills for a hitting percentage of .370. Victoria Urbanczyk added 12 kills on 27 total attacks. Mia Francis secure three service aces, and Anais Velasquez added three blocks.

What’s next
The Saints return home to host Louisiana Christian University on Friday and Saturday.

Women’s soccer defeats Jarvis Christian, 1-0

The women’s soccer team played an evenly matched Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) game against Jarvis Christian University (JCU), but one goal by the Saints gave them the win. The women improved to 3-3-1 overall and 2-2-0 in the conference, while JCU dropped to 2-4-1 and 1-2-1 in the conference.

History
The Saints have a dominant record of 10-0-1 against the Bulldogs, with the tie coming in 2021 when both teams failed to score.

Game highlights
London Suarez made her first start guarding the net for the Saints. She performed effectively by thwarting three attempts from JCU. Leah Tapia took three different shots on goal, but none went through. Lyndee Rheinberger also made two attempts, but the half ended with no goals scored.

OLLU keeper Samantha Valadez took over defending the net in the second half. The period started with five Jarvis fouls and a yellow card to Briza Ibarra. After JCU keeper Andrea Cepeda saved a stab at a goal from Ez Valles, Emily Wissel-Littman followed to shoot one in and give the Saints the 1-0 lead.

Despite the high level of frustration, the Saints maintained their sportsmanship. JCU’s Brisa Ibarra was shown a yellow card followed by a red card 10 minutes later for a rough tackle. The Saints continued to battle after four straight fouls were called against them.

The Saints’ unity was evident in their aggressive offense, with five team members taking six shots on goal. Emily Wissell-Littmann’s decisive kick-in, proved to be the game-winning goal.

Leah Tapia led the team with four shots, while Rheinberger and Wissell-Littmann each took two shots on goal.

Cepeda recorded the loss for Jarvis as she played all 90 minutes. Suarez saved four for the Saints, while Valadez saved three and earned the win.

Both team’s stats were almost identical, with JCU taking 12 shots and OLLU taking 14; JCU with three corners and OLLU with four; and JCU recorded six saves, while OLLU had eight.

What’s next
Looking ahead, the Saints will be on the road, traveling to the University of the Southwest in Hobbs, N.M., on Thursday. They will then head to Dallas on Saturday for a game against Paul Quinn College.

Baseball earns series win over Jarvis Christian

The baseball team tabbed two wins over Jarvis Christian University (JCU) to take the three-game series over the weekend. The Saints improve to 20-14 overall and 12-6 in the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC). The Bulldogs drop to 14-19 overall and 8-10 in RRAC play.

Head Coach Matt Piker commented, “Anytime you can get a series win you should be excited about it. We lost a tough game one but our men bounced back and responded to the challenge in games two and three. It’s a huge credit to their buy in. I also can’t say enough positive things about how good of a job our assistant coaches do. Those men work their tails off for our student athletes every day. Our program is blessed to have them and to have the players that we do.”

History
The Saints were 13-13 against the Bulldogs prior to the series.

Game one
The Saints fell in game one after attempting a comeback late in the contest. The Bulldogs scored the first two runs of the game with one in the first inning and another in the fourth frame. OLLU rallied in the sixth inning to put up one run on a Jacob Montejano single. The inning ended in the following at-bat when Jackson Kalisky flied out to center field with Montejano on second base. The Saints also had a chance in the final inning with runners on first and second base with two outs. Jimmy Valle pinch hit and popped up to shortstop to end the game. The Saints were downed 2-1 and Alec Martinez suffered the loss. Martinez started on the mound and gave up two earned runs with six strikeouts.

Game two
The Saints offense came to life in game two. They defeated the Bulldogs 18-1 backed by 16 hits and four home runs. OLLU scored 15 runs in the first three innings. Montejano, Kalisky, Francisco Martinez and Anthony Valle all went yard and Diego Zuniga finished with four RBIs. Martinez also tallied four RBIs after batting 3-for-3. The Saints had eight players record at least one RBI and nine players had hits. Joshua Mendez earned the win after pitching three innings with three strikeouts. Dominique Boggs pitched four innings of relief.

Game three
The Saints took the third game to win the series. They scored one run on a passed ball in the first inning and followed with another run in the third inning. Tyler Vivier scored in the seventh inning and Zuniga followed with a three-run RBI double in the seventh inning. The Saints won 6-1 behind seven hits. The Bulldogs totaled eight hits, but OLLU limited them to only one run. Javier De Alejandro earned the win after going five innings with six strikeouts. Christopher Perez and Devin Benavides pitched in relief.
