Men’s basketball surges to 8-0 record with win over Jarvis

The men’s basketball team continued its undefeated season by racing past Jarvis Christian University (JCU) 96-86 on Nov. 23. The Saints improve to 8-0 overall and 4-0 in the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC). The Bulldogs fall to 2-5 overall and 2-2 in conference.

History
The Saints were 21-7 against the Bulldogs. Last season the Saints split the series losing the first game 70-73 and winning the second one 78-70.

Basics
The Saints shot 50 percent from the field in the first half and had two players with double digits. Trey Law totaled 11 points and Trevon Dennis had 13. Rob Gil created two turnovers, and the Saints hit 19-of-22 free throws. They scored 51 points in the half while the Bulldogs marked 42. The teams combined for 24 fouls and the Saints finished the frame with nine assists.

Jarvis shot better in the second half, but the Saints were able to keep up. Lonzo Rand and Kenyon Elliott had eight points apiece and both teams committed seven turnovers. The Bulldogs shot 40 percent from three-point range but were only able to get to the charity stripe three times. The Saints won by 10 points to remain undefeated. The Saints had 26 points off turnovers, which doubled the amount JCU was able to gather.

Offensive/defensive standouts
Elliott led the Saints with 16 points, followed by Law with 15. Four different players had four rebounds each. Wahkil Lopez led the squad with five assists.

Jarvis was led by Caleb Thompson with 17 points. Jorden Clark led the squad with five rebounds. Three different players had two assists apiece for the Bulldogs.

Inside the box
OLLU combined for 34-of-64 from the field for a percentage of 53.1. They shot 6-of-23 from three-point range for 26.1 percent and hit 22-of-27 free throws for 81.5 percent. Jarvis shot 33-of-61 for a percentage of 54.1, 8-of-25 three-pointers for 32 percent and 12-of-16 free throws for 75 percent. OLLU added 29 rebounds to JCU’s 25, while the Bulldogs committed 15 turnovers, and OLLU had 14.

Women’s soccer completes first undefeated regular season in Saints history

The women’s soccer team achieved the first undefeated regular season in Saints history with a 4-2 victory over the University of Houston-Victoria (UHV). The Saints finish the regular season with a 10-0 overall record and a 7-0 mark in Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) play. Β Β 

Head Coach Arthur Salazar commented, “The team has had an unbelievable run so far. I’m extremely proud of how they have handled the challenges and adversity the season has presented. Finishing the conference regular season undefeated is certainly a testament to the commitment and sacrifices the players have made.”

History

The Saints lead the series against UHV 13-1.

Basics

The Jaguars tallied the first goal of the game at the 32nd minute on an own goal from the Saints. OLLU gathered their composure five minutes later with a goal from Baye Polansky (SR/Helotes, Texas) assisted by Jaylin Seto (JR/Houston, Texas). Polansky recorded another goal with two seconds left in the first half to give the Saints a 2-1 advantage.

Ambree Rheinberger (SO/San Antonio, Texas) and Brianna Yanez (SO/Portland, Texas) both scored in the second half for the Saints to increase the lead to 4-1. The Jaguars tallied a late goal and the Saints held on for a 4-2 win. The Saints recorded 10 shots on goal. OLLU will be the No. 1 seed in the upcoming RRAC Tournament.

Leading the way for the Saints’ offense was Polansky with four shots. Consuelo Luna led the Jaguars with two shots.

Volleyball dominates Langston to remain undefeated

VB1026The volleyball team swept the Langston University 3-0 in a Red River Athletic Conference match Friday evening. The win keeps the Saints undefeated in conference with an 11-0 record and 18-3 overall, while the Lions drop to 3-7 in conference and overall. The first-place Saints are two-and-a-half games ahead of the University of St. Thomas (8-2/13-8), followed by Wiley College (8-3/10-8) and the University of the Southwest (6-5/8-17). All four teams have qualified for the conference tournament that the Saints will host Nov. 13-14. Still vying for the final two spots are Langston, Huston-Tillotson University (3-7/3-14), Jarvis Christian College (2-9/7-24) and Texas College (1-9/2-19). Read full story online.
