OLLU to mark ‘Earth Day’ with third annual SuSAINTSability Day

To mark Earth Day, the university will hold its third annual “OLLU SuSAINTSability” Day today at noon in the Mall Area with an unusual event that will answer this question:

How many cockroaches does it take to cover a professor?

Students will find out by purchasing cockroaches and dumping them in a box which holds Biology professor Adam Bynum. One dollar buys one cockroach, $3 gets five roaches and  $5 gets 10 roaches.

Hosted by TexasFast, the proceeds will benefit Sigma Zeta, OLLU’s Math and Science National Honor Society.

The two-hour event will include Environmental Science and Sustainability students playing table bingo for free lunches, TExAS FAST students making seed bombs, Criminal Justice Society students doing waste audit demonstrations and first-generation/McNair Scholars upcycling t-shirts with bleach.

Peace Garden founder honored with garden stone on Earth Day

The Center for Women in Church and Society honored the late Sister Martha Rose Lange, CDP, founder of the Peace Garden, with a garden stone on April 22, Earth Day.

Members of the CDP/ACDP Earth Care Committee thought Earth Day was the perfect day to honor the caretakers of the Peace Garden who have answered God’s call to care for the Earth. The CDP/ACDP Earth Care Committee held a prayer service on Earth Day and honored Sister Martha Rose, who brought glory to God by planting, nurturing and growing all the beauty you see in the Peace Garden.

Julie Bedson honored the deceased members of the Earth Care Committee with metal flowers with their names painted on the pedals.

Before her death, Sister Martha Rose was asked why she spent so much time working in the Peace Garden. Sister Martha Rose said, “If you only knew how many people from the university come to the Peace Garden.” Sister Martha Rose was always welcoming and eager to talk about the Peace Garden.

OLLU students from the National Student Speech Language Hearing Association (NSSLHA) who have been caring for the Peace Garden, dressed as the four seasons, each also represented one of the four elements of nature. They blessed the Peace Garden and those who participated in the Earth Day Celebration with holy water. During the blessing OLLU Alum Dr. Bonnie Abadie sang Peace is Flowing Like a River.

‘Shred Days’ set for April

To mark Earth Day and demonstrate support for environmental protection, OLLU Shred Days will be held April 21-22.

  2. Record destruction by using the: Records Destruction Form*
  3. Place private files in a standard size banker’s box
  4. Items that can be left in: staples
  5. Items that must be removed: spiral binders, metal clips, paper clips

*Documents for Shred Day must be approved by a supervisor or the Compliance Officer to ensure that the record is not relevant to any pending or anticipated litigation, claims, audit, investigation or enforcement actions prior to destruction. Participants who have completed the form by April 16 will be given instructions on where to bring their boxes.
