OLLU to mark ‘Earth Day’ with third annual SuSAINTSability Day

To mark Earth Day, the university will hold its third annual “OLLU SuSAINTSability” Day today at noon in the Mall Area with an unusual event that will answer this question:

How many cockroaches does it take to cover a professor?

Students will find out by purchasing cockroaches and dumping them in a box which holds Biology professor Adam Bynum. One dollar buys one cockroach, $3 gets five roaches and  $5 gets 10 roaches.

Hosted by TexasFast, the proceeds will benefit Sigma Zeta, OLLU’s Math and Science National Honor Society.

The two-hour event will include Environmental Science and Sustainability students playing table bingo for free lunches, TExAS FAST students making seed bombs, Criminal Justice Society students doing waste audit demonstrations and first-generation/McNair Scholars upcycling t-shirts with bleach.

OLLU students, professors shine at Sigma Zeta National Convention

Four OLLU students and two professors distinguished themselves at the 2022 virtual Sigma Zeta National Convention in Moorehead, Minnesota this past weekend.

Emma Collins, Rachel Dziuba, Raul Gutierrez and Getsemani Arteaga made strong presentations of their research. Collins received a cash award for delivering one of the top three presentations at the convention.

Mason Kulbaba, PhD, Assistant Professor of Biology, was chosen President-elect of the Sigma Zeta National Science & Mathematics Honor Society. At the convention, Dr. Kulbaba served as an oral presentation judge with Jim Hall, PhD, Professor of Biology.

Dr. Kulbaba also served as research mentor for Collins and Arteaga and served as faculty chair of the Resolutions Committee.

Students present research at Sigma Zeta national convention

Madeline Wolken, a December graduate in Biology, presented the results of her research titled, “Comparison of Two Methods for Measuring Efficacy of Antimicrobial Agents,” with Dr. James Hall at the Sigma Zeta National Science/Math Honor Society annual convention on March 19.

OLLU students Christopher Woodbury and Victoria Mendez also presented their research title, “Elevated temperature and RoundUp™ Herbicide Decrease Mitotic Division and Apoptosis in Marine Primary Producers (Gymnodinium sp.),” with Dr. Briana Hauff Salas at the same convention. The Proceedings of the meeting will be published in the 2021 Sigma Zeta, the organization’s journal.
