Strategic Planning In-Depth Dialogue Sessions continue this week

Faculty and staff are invited to in-depth dialogue sessions to provide input and learn more about proposed Strategic Planning initiatives.

Initiatives have been grouped under three vision statements:

  • OLLU Academic Programs Will Transform the University and the Lives of Students
  • OLLU Will Be a Model HSI/MSI by Implementing Student Centered Practices that Ensure Every Student Persists to Graduation
  • OLLU Will Be a Vibrant Community that Fosters Personal Connections, Spirit and Pride

There are meeting options related to each of the areas. Faculty and staff can attend a dialogue for each area or only the areas that are of interest to them.

The remaining dialogue sessions will take place the following days and times:

Call for writing and art submissions to digital publication with focus on disabilities

The OLLU chapter of Delta Alpha Pi (DAPi), an international honor society for students with disabilities, is seeking submissions for its inaugural digital publication, “Coloring Outside of the Lines.”

The publication is seeking individuals who advocate or self-identify with disabilities, be it visible or invisible. Submissions should express the creator’s individuality and experience, be it theirs or someone they know.

Submissions are sought for the following categories:

  • Writing
    • Prose: up to five pages of nonfiction
    • Poetry: up to three poems submitted in one document
  • Art
    • 2-D art should not exceed 24”x 36”
    • 3-D art should not exceed 24” x 36” x 24”
    • All mediums will be accepted (i.e. wet, dry, print, photography, etc.) excluding video content
    • Art should be submitted in digital format (i.e. a photo of 3-D artwork) for consideration
    • If artwork should exceed these requirements, artists are encouraged to complete the application for consideration

Authors and artists accepted for publication will be invited to present their work during the Coloring Outside of the Lines: DAPi Publication Author and Artist Showcase on Friday, April 6, 2018, at 5:30 p.m. in Providence Hall, West Social Room.

OLLU golf returns as co-host of the San Antonio Shootout at TPC San Antonio with Oklahoma City University

For the second year in a row, the OLLU men’s golf team will partner with the Oklahoma City University (OCU) Stars to host the San Antonio Shootout today and tomorrow. The event will take place at the TPC San Antonio Canyon and Oaks Courses.

The San Antonio Shootout will feature 14 teams from throughout the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), including top-ranked teams in Golfstat – the official source for college golf scores and statistics. Read full story at www.ollusaintsathletics.com.

OLLU men’s basketball ends regular season with a loss to LSU-Alexandria

The OLLU men’s basketball team dropped its last regular season game against LSU-Alexandria (LSUA) 73-68. The loss will move the Saints to the No. 3 seed in the Red River Athletic Conference. They end the regular season with a conference record of 13-5 and move to 20-10 overall. LSUA finishes the regular season with a 14-4 record and improves to 23-7 overall.

The Saints are 2-7 against the Generals. Earlier this season, the Saints defeated the Generals 71-68.

The Saints will get set for the conference tournament that begins on March 1 in Longview, Texas. OLLU will play in the first round on Thursday, March 1 at 7:30 p.m. against the No. 6 seed.

OLLU women’s basketball ends regular season with a win over LSU-Alexandria

The OLLU women’s basketball team secured a No. 2 seed in the Red River Athletic Conference Tournament and a first-round bye after defeating LSU-Alexandria (LSUA) 98-71.  In the last game of the regular season, the Saints end with a conference record of 16-2 and improve to 22-8 overall, while LSUA drops to 9-13 overall and 9-9 in conference.

The Saints are 8-0 against the Generals. In their first match up this season, the Saints won 99-85.

Head Coach Christopher Minner commented, “This was a good bounce back win. We had a lot of players in double figures. We really played well in the second and third period. Now we need to get ready for the conference tournament on Friday. We still have a chance for our second tournament championship, and we just need to stay focused and execute.”

‘Mujeres en Acción /Women in Action’ to celebrate the role of women in higher education

As part of the San Antonio Tricentennial celebration, the OLLU Center for Women in  Church and Society is hosting the event “Mujeres en Acción/Women in Action,” Wednesday, March 7, at 6 p.m. in Thiry Auditorium.

The event will explore the pivotal role of women in the history of education in San Antonio. The discussion will begin with the arrival of the Sisters of Congregation of Divine Providence and the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word in the late 1800s and continue through the years to the present struggles and successes in higher education. The discussion will include women religious, women activist-scholars and women of color.

Featured speakers include:

Diane Langford, CDP
Sister Diane Langford, CDP, a vowed member of the Congregation of Divine Providence of San Antonio since 1979, has a background in education, counseling and in Catholic parish work and has served on the General Council of the Congregation of Divine Providence. She is the author of, “The Tattered Heart: A Historical Fiction Biography of Mother St. Andrew Feltin,” “God has been God for Us: The History of the Missionary Servants of St. Anthony,” and “Shepherds in the Image of Christ: The Centennial History of St. John’s Assumption Seminary Archdiocese of San Antonio, Texas.” She serves as the Director of Faith Formation at St. Peter’s Parish in Joplin, Mo., where she currently resides.

Norma E. Cantú
Publishing in the areas of folklore, literary studies, women’s studies and border studies, Cantú is the author and editor/coeditor of numerous works including the award-winning “Canícula: Snapshots of a Girlhood en la Frontera.” Her novel, “Cabañuelas, A Love Story,” will be out in spring 2019. She is co-founder of CantoMundo, a space for Latin@ poets and a member of the Macondo Writers Workshop. Recently she received the Lifetime Scholarly Achievement Award from the American Folklore Society and the Luis Leal Award for Distinction in Chicano/Latino Literature.

Ariana Brown
Ariana Brown is a Black Mexican American poet from San Antonio. She is the recipient of two Academy of American Poets Prizes and a 2014 collegiate national poetry slam champion. Brown, who has been dubbed a “part-time curandera,” is primarily interested in using poetry to validate black girl rage in all its miraculous forms. She is currently earning an MFA in Poetry at the University of Pittsburgh.

This event is hosted by the OLLU Center for Women in Church and Society in collaboration with the Office of the President, Office of the Provost and Center for Mexican American Studies and Research. It is generously supported by the Impetus Foundation through the OLLU Higher Education for a New America (HENA) Initiative.

The event is free and open to the public.

Professor Terkun-Castro awarded research fellowship

Kristina Terkun-Castro, PhD, assistant professor of economics, has been awarded the highly competitive Church Management Research Fellowship, sponsored by the Center for Church Management at Villanova University.  As part of the fellowship, Dr. Terkun-Castro will attend in-residence research sessions on campus at Villanova.

Dr. Terkun-Castro conducts research in the field of the economics of religion. At Villanova she will be mentored by two top researchers in the field.  In summary, her research proposal focuses on the impact of financial literacy among clergy members.

Dr. polanco to receive Michael White Legacy Award 

Marcela Polanco, PhD, associate professor of psychology, has received the Michael White Legacy Award from the Texas Association for Marriage and Family Therapists. This is the first time the award has been presented.

When reviewing nominations for the award, the committee considered candidates who demonstrated the following qualities:

  • A clinician or student who embraces the practice of narrative therapy
  • A clinician or student who exemplifies the ideas of postmodern thinking in clinical work and practice
  • A clinician or student who addresses the ideas of social justice and the effects of discord in society, and who strives to address such discord through community or clinical work.
