‘Use it or lose it’ deadline is Dec. 31

Employees are reminded that there is a one-year, carry-over limit on accrued vacation time. The “use-it-or-lose-it” date is Dec. 31.

Employees cannot carry over beyond this date more than the number of annual vacation days for which they are currently eligible. If work or medical conditions prohibit the employee from taking their accrued vacation by Dec. 31, the chief administrator of that division can request an extension of one additional year. The chief administrator and the employee must make every effort to schedule and use the accrued vacation in the coming year as additional extensions will not be permitted.

Contact a Human Resources team member or call 210-431-3970 for more information.

Employees must complete security training by Thursday

As part of the university’s ongoing efforts to protect OLLU’s information and technologies, all employees must complete information security training by Thursday (Nov. 23). Employees who do not complete the training will not have access to the OLLU network (including email, Microsoft Office, etc. ) upon return from the Thanksgiving holiday.

This is a security compliance requirement.

All employees should have received an email from notifications@securityiq-notifications.com. This is a legitimate email and should not be deleted. Follow instructions in the email to complete your training. Employees will receive reminder emails until the training is complete. If you have not received the email, please search your junk email folder or contact the Help Desk.

The training involves a series of videos on a variety of security topics. The videos do not have to be viewed all in one session, but all training must be complete by the deadline.

International Education Week ends with focus on international athletes

OLLU is proud to have celebrated International Students Day (Nov. 17), as well as International Education Week (Nov. 13-17) with highlights of all the student-athletes on social media. The 32 student-athletes at OLLU hail from Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Croatia, the Czech Republic, England, Estonia, France, Germany, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand and Spain.

One of these scholars – Enzo Frequelin – has been at OLLU since 2022 after transferring from Seward Community College in Liberal, Kan. A native of France, Frequelin earned Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) Player of the Week and All-Tournament honors.

A great example of a student-athlete achieving much success is Frequelin, who is on his way to earning a Bachelor of Business Administration in Management and Finance this December. He has been approved for Post-Completion Optional Practical Training for one year starting in January 2023. In addition, Frequelin has secured employment directly related to his course of study with Voltaire Design, a French Saddle Brand that is developing in the United States.

“One of the best parts of studying in the United States as an international student,” Frequelin commented, “has been immersing myself in the local culture and traditions here in San Antonio and at OLLU. I’ve loved discovering new holidays and events like Dia de los Muertos and Fiesta that show the rich Latino heritage of the city. Getting to sample amazing Tex-Mex cuisine like tacos and queso has also been so enjoyable! I love Mexican American culture.”

Frequelin continued, “The biggest life lesson I’ve had at OLLU is for me to take every opportunity that life will give you, and to do it at 200 percent, with no regret at the end. OLLU impacted my life with a lot of positives; I transferred to OLLU in January 2022 for the tennis team, and I’ve had a great experience in my sport. I’ve also had a great school experience with all of my professors.”

All of the international student-athletes at OLLU have had similar experiences as Frequelin, and all have accomplished accolades on their playing field as well as in the classroom. OLLU is proud to take this opportunity to celebrate the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide.

The joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education is an opportunity to highlight the value of global and cultural competencies skills for success in the 21st Century.
