Women’s soccer defeats Jarvis Christian College on Seniors’ Day

The women’s soccer team defeated Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) rival Jarvis Christian College (JCC) 2-0 on Seniors’ Day. The Saints remain undefeated at 6-0 overall and improve to 3-0 in RRAC play. The Bulldogs drop to 0-3 overall and 0-1 in the RRAC.

The Saints honored goalies Mikaela Gilbert (SR/San Antonio, Texas) and Savannah Hernandez (SR/El Paso, Texas), defender Victoria Morales (SR/Brownsville, Texas) and midfielders Baye Polansky (SR/Helotes, Texas) and Yolanda Vazquez (SR/Los Angeles, Calif.) as part of Seniors’ Day.

History

The Saints are undefeated against Jarvis all-time at 6-0. 

Basics

Both teams failed to score a goal in the first half. The Saints dominated most of the half with 10 shots and forced the Bulldogs to make eight saves. OLLU also took two corner kicks.

The second half was also scoreless until the 74th minute. Senior Polansky scored on a penalty kick after a handball foul to give the Saints the advantage. Senior Yolanda Vazquez scored 12 minutes later to extend the Saints lead and eventually seal the 2-0 win. The Saints tallied 15 shots on goal and limited the Bulldogs to one. Goalkeepers Nallely Infante (SO/Houston, Texas), Savannah Hernandez and Tess Pitcher (FR/San Antonio, Texas) all saw time in the net, with Hernandez earning the win.

Inside the box score

Leading the way for the Saints’ offense was Kyleigh Spree-Kolos (FR/Victoria, Texas) and Dawson Brinkley (JR/San Antonio, Texas) with three shots each. All three of Brinkley’s shots were on goal. Three different players led the Bulldogs with one shot each.

The Saints tallied 18 shots, 15 on goal. Jarvis recorded three shots with one on goal.

The Saints face the University of the Southwest for another RRAC matchup at home on March 13 at 11 a.m.

Joanna Gonzalez selected as softball conference player of the week

Joanna Gonzalez (JR/San Benito, Texas) earned the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) Softball Player of the Week award for Feb. 22-28. This is the third set of weekly awards for the 2021 softball season.

Gonzalez was 8-for-19 at the plate with six RBIs in a 3-4 week for the Saints. The junior catcher from San Benito, Texas, started the week with two doubles in a 5-1 win over the University of St. Thomas (Texas), and she was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs in a 5-2 victory over Texas Women’s University. Gonzalez capped the week with a 2-for-2 outing including a home run in a 4-0 defeat of Trinity University (Texas). For the week, she scored three runs and collected three doubles. Gonzalez is now tied for first in the conference with 11 RBIs. The Saints moved to 5-7 on the season.

Maldonado, Rosser and Strzelczyk earn conference volleyball players of the week

Jaalin Rosser (FR/Killeen, Texas) captured the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) Volleyball Attacker of the Week award for Feb. 22-28. OLLU swept all of this week’s honors, with Madelynn Strzelczyk (FR/San Antonio, Texas) earning RRAC Setter of the Week and Ashley Maldonado (JR/Laredo, Texas) tabbed as RRAC Defender of the Week. 

This is the fourth set of conference awards for the 2020 volleyball season, typically completed in the fall but suspended to spring play this year.

Rosser posted a .409 attack percentage as the Saints swept Jarvis Christian College (JCC) in three sets. The freshman outside hitter from Killeen, Texas, powered home 11 kills on 22 attempts with only two errors. She averaged 3.7 kills per set and added six digs to her stat line. OLLU is now 6-1 on the season. 

Strzelczyk generated 28 assists in the JCC match. The freshman setter from San Antonio averaged 9.3 digs per set and chipped in six digs. 

Maldonado kicked in 10 digs and three assists against JCC. The junior right-side hitter from Laredo, Texas, delivered 3.3 digs per set.

Virtual Town Hall meeting set for Thursday

There will be a virtual Town Hall meeting for employees on Thursday. March 4 at 3 p.m.  During this time, OLLU administrators will share updates and answer questions. Alumni to discuss impact of OLLU at Women’s HerStory Month event

In celebration of OLLU’s 125th anniversary, four distinguished female alumni will share the impact of the university on their lives during “Carriers of the Legacy,” a Women’s HerStory Month virtual event that will be held Friday, March 19, at 12:30 p.m. 

The one hour panel discussion will feature:

  • Margie E. Padilla, PharmD (BA 1998), a Clinical Associate Professor and Interprofessional Education Coordinator at the University of Texas at El Paso School of Pharmacy. In 2017, the American Pharmacists Association honored Dr. Padilla with the Immunization Champions Award for outstanding contributions to improving the vaccinate rates in communities.  
  • Lorena G. Gonzalez, PhD (BA 1989, PhD 2005), a member of the OLLU Board of Trustees and Vice President of Urban Strategies. Dr. Gonzalez is a graduate of Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government’s Executive Education Program. She is co-author of the Amazon bestseller, “Inheritance: Discovering the Richness of Latio Culture and Family.” 
  • Jessica Ortiz (BA 2017) a Media Relations Specialist for RAICES Texas and a former award-winning journalist. One year after graduating with a degree in mass communications, Ortiz won a Lone Star Emmy Award as a Univision 41 assistant producer for best morning/daytime newscast in a medium market. 
  • Marika Azocar (BA 2013) the Impact Director at City Year Boston, an AmeriCorps program. In her leadership role, Azocar is dedicated to improving education equity in Boston Public Schools. She received a certificate in Nonprofit Management and Leadership from Tufts University.

SGA extends deadline for candidates seeking president, vice president positions

The Student Government Association (SGA) has extended the application deadline for president and vice president candidates to Tuesday, March 2 by 11:59 p.m.

Interviews will be held on Friday, March 5 at student availability.

Saints Production Board to present ‘Stand Up Comedy Show’ with B Smitty

The Saints Production Board will present the “Stand Up Comedy Show” starring B Smitty on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. in Chapel Auditorium.

All are invited to come laugh and decompress during mid-terms week with Bobby Smith, aka B Smitty, a popular comedian known for self-deprecating humor that connects audiences with his past mistakes.

Ariel Montgomery throws no-hitter against Trinity

The softball team welcomed NCAA D3 Trinity University (TU) for a doubleheader on Sunday. The Saints lost the first game 7-3 and won the second game 4-0. OLLU is now 5-7 this season while the Tigers move to 4-2. Ariel Montgomery (JR/Castroville, Texas) threw a no-hitter that included seven strikeouts in game two. Montgomery puts her name in the record books among nine other Saints players that have thrown no-hitters.

Game one

Abigail Elizondo (FR/San Antonio, Texas) singled to left field in the bottom of the second inning to give the Saints an early 1-0 lead. The Tigers responded in the following inning with a run to tie the game. Joanna Gonzalez (JR/San Benito, Texas) singled to bring in Madison Nunn (JR/Cibolo, Texas) in the third inning and Montgomery hit a solo home run in the sixth inning. The Saints led 3-1 heading into the seventh inning. The Tigers offense found life and they put up six runs to lead 7-3. The Saints were unable to score in the bottom of the seventh inning and lost by four runs.

Starting pitcher Angela Ramirez (JR/Converse, Texas) pitched 6.1 innings and allowed six hits and three earned runs. The Saints totaled 10 hits and left five runners on base.

Game two

Montgomery led the Saints to a 4-0 victory by pitching a no-hitter in game two. She struck out seven batters and walked two. Gonzalez batted 2-for-2 and Elizondo went 2-for-3. Katelyn Esparza (SO/San Antonio, Texas) drove in two runs and the Saints tallied seven total hits. The win marks the first game of 2021 that the Saints have held their opponent scoreless.

The Saints play in the Red Dirt Classic Softball Tournament in Oklahoma City starting on March 5.
