Help raise money for OLLU students and enjoy some Cajun-inspired fun at ‘Down on the Bayou’

The Division of Mission and Ministry and the Congregation of Divine Providence are teaming up to host “Down on the Bayou,” Feb. 15 from 6-10 p.m. in Chapel Auditorium.

The night of Cajun food, music, dancing and a silent auction will raise money to help OLLU students who will be making a pilgrimage to France to follow in the footsteps of Fr. John Martin Moye, founder of the Congregation of the Sisters of Divine Providence.

Tickets are $75 per person or $500 for a table of eight.

OLLU’s Nashae Owens receives conference ‘Player of the Week’ honors

Nashae Owens1Nashae Owens earned a share of the Red River Athletic Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week award for the dates of Jan. 20-26. Owens, a junior guard from Pearland, Texas, guided the 11th-ranked Saints to a 2-1 week. Playing every minute except for one in three games, she averaged 21.7 points and 4.7 rebounds. Owens led OLLU with 29 points and six boards in a 109-100 victory over Huston-Tillotson University before dropping in 17 points in a 96-92 showdown win over Wiley. She also accounted for 19 points in a loss to LSU Shreveport. Overall, Owens made 21-of-45 shots from the field and 19-of-22 from the free throw line. LSU-Shreveport delivers first conference loss to OLLU women’s basketball

WomensBB1-25-1The women’s basketball team fell to Louisiana State University – Shreveport Saturday night to record its first conference loss of the season. The Saints drop to 6-1 in the Red River Athletic Conference and 15-2 overall, while LSU-S improves to 7-2 and 14-5 overall. The Saints (the No. 11 team in the NAIA) and LSU-S are one game behind league-leader and No. 13 ranked Wiley College (8-1/18-2). Nashae Owens led the team in scoring with 19, including 5-of-13 from the field, 2-of-6 3-pointers and 7-of-8 free throws. She added six assists and three steals. Rebecca Kolawole scored 18 points, while Mercedes Dobson finished with 10 points. OLLU shot 33 percent from the field, 25 percent from 3-point range and 81 percent from the free throw line. Despite early lead, the OLLU men’s basketball team drops conference game to Shreveport

MensBB1-25-2The men’s basketball team was hoping for a 3-0 road trip this past week, but the Saints blew their chance after losing 109-116 to Louisiana State University – Shreveport on Saturday evening. The loss to the Red River Athletic Conference’s leader dropped the Saints to 5-2 and 10-8 overall, while the Pilots improved to 9-0 and 13-5 overall. The Saints are one game behind second place University of St. Thomas (7-2/11-7) and tied with Wiley College (6-3/14-4). The Saints made just 12-of-43 3-pointers, and the team shot 46 percent from the field and 70 percent from the free-throw line. Xavier Roberson led the Saints in shooting with 34 points, including 11-of-17 from the field, five 3-pointers and 7-of-10 from the free throw line. Brock Hunter followed with 22 points, and CJ Martinez finished with 16 points. The Saints will return home to host Langston University on Friday and Bacone College on Saturday. Community invited to attend ‘Dvorak’ hosted by TPR

DvorakThe OLLU community is invited to attend “TPR Presents: Dvorak,” tonight at 7 p.m. in Thiry Auditorium.

The concert, hosted by Texas Public Radio, is a preview of the upcoming Dvorak Festival from several local performing arts organizations. Each group will present its interpretation of the work of Antonin Dvorak, one of the great composers of the 19th century. Groups include, the Children’s Chorus of San Antonio, Youth Orchestras of San Antonio and Alamo Arts Ballet Theater.

There will be a reception following the concert.

Admission is a suggested donation of $10.

‘Find the Power of Providence’ at retreat hosted by Sister Joyce Detzel, CDP

d-detzel-2Students, staff and faculty are invited to attend, “Finding the Power of Providence in Your Everyday Life,” Feb. 1 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. in the Elliott House. Sister Joyce Detzel, CDP, will lead the retreat.

For deeper engagement, participants are also invited to attend an optional overnight retreat at the convent for single Catholic women open to exploring the possibility of a call from God to respond to the power of Providence as a Sister of Divine Providence.

Help OLLU improve ‘Best of the West,’ enter to win $50 gift certificate

BOTW2014“Best of the West,” OLLU’s official Fiesta® event, is entering its third year and the Institutional Advancement Office would like to hear from the OLLU community to help make this year’s event the best so far. Students, staff and faculty are encouraged to take this survey to provide their feedback on the event.

Once the survey is completed, participants will have the opportunity to submit their name and contact information for a chance to win a $50 gift certificate for OLLUSaintsGear.com where they can order a variety of apparel, spirit and decorative items branded with the OLLU or Saints logo.

This year’s “Best of the West” event is scheduled to take place on campus April 5, 2014.  

Deadline to apply for spring commencement extended to Wednesday

Because offices were closed on Jan. 24, the deadline to submit an application for spring graduation has been extended to Wednesday, Jan. 29. Students who plan to graduate at the end of the spring semester and take part in the May commencement ceremonies must apply for graduation by Wednesday with the Registrar’s Office. Visit the Registrar’s webpage or stop by the office in the Walter Center.
