Men’s basketball uses explosive offense in 102-80 victory over Jarvis

The men’s basketball team raced past Jarvis Christian College (JCC) 102-80 on Saturday. The Saints jump to 7-9 overall and 2-4 in the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC). The Bulldogs fall to 4-9 overall and 0-5 in conference matchups.

History

The Saints were 17-6 against JCC in the all-time series prior to the game today.

Basics

The Saints shot extremely well in a convincing win over Jarvis on Saturday afternoon. They rallied behind 63 percent shooting from the field and 6-of-7 three-pointers in the first half. They limited the Bulldogs to 2-of-11 shooting from three-point range and forced five turnovers. Ellis Jones (JR/Houston, Texas) and Ruben Monzon (SR/San Diego, Calif.) had double-digit scoring and Jordan Embry (SR/Paris, Texas) tallied four rebounds prior to halftime. The Saints headed to the locker room with a 48-36 advantage.

OLLU continued to score at will in the second half with 54 points. The Bulldogs improved from the field at 50 percent shooting and 53.8 percent shooting from three-point range. Ten different Saints players tallied at least two points in the second half and Embry added five rebounds to his total. Xavier Purnell (FR/Stafford, Va.) and Jonathan Sanchez (SR/McAllen, Texas) contributed six points each off the bench. The Saints cruised to a 102-80 victory and four players finished with double-digit scoring.

Offensive/defensive standouts

Jones and Monzon led the Saints with 20 points apiece. Embry grabbed a team-high nine rebounds. Sanchez and Georges Darwiche (SR/Bucharest, Romania) had three assists each.

JCC was led by Semaj Matthews in all three major categories. He had 18 points, seven rebounds and three assists.

Inside the box

OLLU combined for 35-of-64 shooting for 54.7 percent, 10-of-14 from three-point range for 71.4 percent and 22-of-26 from the free-throw line for 84.6 percent.

JCC combined for 25-of-53 from the field for 47.2 percent, 9-of-24 three-pointers for 37.5 percent and 21-of-32 from the charity stripe for 65.5 percent.

The Saints grabbed 44 rebounds while the Bulldogs gathered 21. OLLU forced 10 turnovers and committed 11.

Men’s basketball defeats Bacone to move to 5-0 in conference

Men's Basketball 1-10-15-2The men’s basketball team defeated Bacone College (BC) 99-80 in a Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) game. The win moves the Saints to 10-1 on the season and 5-0 in the RRAC. The Warriors dropped to 4-10 on the season and 0-5 in conference. The game began with a back and forth pace that saw the lead change six times in the first period. OLLU led by as many as eight points with less than 90 seconds left in the half, but BC was able to cut that in half with the last shot of the half for a halftime score of 44-40. In the second half, the Saints were able to create some separation after shooting 53 percent and great performances from Jeremy Hines and De’Quentin Greer to win by a margin of 19 points 99-80. The Saints will take their unbeaten conference record on the road for a two-game stretch. OLLU will visit Wiley College on Friday, Jan. 16 and Jarvis Christian College on Saturday, Jan. 17. OLLU names Ryan Wall as head men’s basketball coach

2013OLLUMBBCoachRyanWallOLLU has named Ryan Wall head men’s basketball coach. Wall took over as head coach of the Saints in November 2013 on an interim basis after the resignation of Russell Vanlandingham. Vanlandingham was the first coach of the men’s basketball team when it returned to competition in 2009 – he coached the team for four years. Wall joined the Saints in the 2012-2013 season as assistant coach. Wall came to OLLU from Ranger College, where he was the assistant coach and recruiting coordinator. Under head coach, Larry Brown, Ranger College won the North Texas Junior College Athletic Conference his last season – the first time in more than 40 years. Prior to Ranger, Wall was the graduate assistant for the University of South Alabama men’s basketball team. While here, he met and mentored future OLLU standout Xavier Roberson, who became only the second Saint to earn NAIA All-American honors. Roberson became the Saints’ all-time leading scorer and was the runner-up in the NAIA’s 3-Point Shooting Contest and a member of the winning inaugural all-star team. Read full article online.

Men’s basketball ends season with a loss to St. Thomas in conference semifinals

Marcus3-10-14The men’s basketball team ended its season last Friday after losing the semifinals match to the University of St. Thomas 64-74. The Saints finish at 21-11 overall and 14-4 in the Red River Athletic Conference, while St. Thomas advances to the conference tournament finals with a record of 20-9 overall and 14-4 in conference. Xavier Roberson (SR, Houston, Texas), the nation’s leading scorer, had one point in the first half and finished with 18 including 7-of-16 field goals, 3-of-9 3-pointers and 1-of-2 free throws. Wood-Dvorak added 17 points including 6-of-13 from the field goal and 5-of-10 from 3-point range. The only other Saint to score in double digits was Mike Willie (SR, Austin, Texas), who finished with 13 points. Overall, the Saints shot 35 percent from the field, 31 percent from 3-point range and 61 percent from the free-throw line. Roberson and Wood-Dvorak were selected to the All-Tournament Team. Men’s basketball loses battle to LSU-Shreveport to end regular season

MBB3-3-14The men’s basketball team played a great game to close out its regular season, but LSU-Shreveport pushed through to win 88-84. The Saints finish with a 14-4 Red River Athletic Conference record and 20-10 overall, while the Pilots move to 16-2 in conference and 21-7 overall. The Pilots are the conference regular season champions and the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament that begins next week. The Saints will be the No. 3 seed, and they will host No. 6 Bacone (8-10/12-18) on Wednesday, March 5. No. 5 Langston University (9-9/11-15) will host No. 4 Wiley (13-5/22-6). The winner of the lowest remaining seed will play LSU-Shreveport on March 7, while No. 2 University of St. Thomas will play the highest remaining seed. The championship game will take place on March 8 at 4:30 p.m. Both Friday and Saturday games will take place at East Texas Baptist University in Marshall, Texas. All Saints’ game will be live streamed. The Pilots shot 50 percent from the field, 44 percent from 3-point range and 75 percent from the free-throw line. Prior to the game, seniors DJ Castro, Mike Willie, Xavier Roberson and Marcus Thompson were honored for playing their last regular season home games. Men’s basketball defeats Jarvis and Texas College over the weekend

MBB2-24The OLLU men’s basketball team won two road games over the weekend. The Saints snuck by Jarvis Christian College 92-90 on Friday and then destroyed Texas College 121-89 on Saturday. The wins improve the Saints record to 13-2 in the Red River Athletic Conference and 19-8 overall. Jarvis drops to 5-12 in conference and 8-15 overall, while Texas College sinks to 3-14 and 7-18 overall. The Saints are one game behind league-leader LSU-Shreveport (14-1/19-6) and one game ahead of the University of St. Thomas (13-4/17-9). Wiley College (10-5/19-6), Langston University (9-8/10-14), Bacone College (8-8/11-16), Huston-Tillotson University (6-10/8-19), Jarvis, Texas, Paul Quinn (1-21) and the University of the Southwest (0-16/2-23) follow. Marcus Thompson selected as ‘Men’s Basketball Player of the Week’

marcus2-17Marcus Thompson earned recognition as the Red River Athletic Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week with a record-breaking performance during the span of Feb. 10-16. This is the 13th award of the 2013-14 season. This is Thompson’s first Player of the Week honor. Thompson, a senior guard from Garland, Texas, established a new NAIA single-game mark for steals with 15 in a 118-68 victory over Paul Quinn College on Saturday. Eclipsing the record set by Duane Glenn of the University of Pittsburgh-Bradford (Pa.) in 1993, Thompson extended his season total to 96, which is the best of any NAIA player. The NCAA men’s basketball record for most steals was also 13 set by Daron “Mookie” Blaylock, who played for Oklahoma. He set the record in a game against Centenary on Dec. 12, 1987. Thompson’s all-around performance included averages of 7.0 points, 5.3 rebounds and 6.7 assists per game as the Saints also won games over Langston University (Okla.) and the University of St. Thomas (Texas). Thompson had six steals against Langston and three against UST as OLLU surged to 10-2 in conference play and 16-8 on the season. Thompson not only excels on the court, he also shines in the classroom. In each of his three years at OLLU, he has received the Red River Athletic Conference Scholar Award for maintaining a 3.0 or better GPA. During the 2011-2012 season, he received men’s basketball’s Sixth Man Award, and last season, he received the Dedication Award. During the spring 2013 academic year, he was named to the Dean’s List.

Despite early lead, the OLLU men’s basketball team drops conference game to Shreveport

MensBB1-25-2The men’s basketball team was hoping for a 3-0 road trip this past week, but the Saints blew their chance after losing 109-116 to Louisiana State University – Shreveport on Saturday evening. The loss to the Red River Athletic Conference’s leader dropped the Saints to 5-2 and 10-8 overall, while the Pilots improved to 9-0 and 13-5 overall. The Saints are one game behind second place University of St. Thomas (7-2/11-7) and tied with Wiley College (6-3/14-4). The Saints made just 12-of-43 3-pointers, and the team shot 46 percent from the field and 70 percent from the free-throw line. Xavier Roberson led the Saints in shooting with 34 points, including 11-of-17 from the field, five 3-pointers and 7-of-10 from the free throw line. Brock Hunter followed with 22 points, and CJ Martinez finished with 16 points. The Saints will return home to host Langston University on Friday and Bacone College on Saturday. Men’s basketball wins one of two on the road

MBB1-11Despite leading through most of the game, the Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) men’s basketball team was unable to pull off the win against conference opponent University of St. Thomas last Friday. The Saints lost 74-80. On Saturday, the Saints came back to annihilate Paul Quinn College with a 125-77 win. The Saints are now 6-7 overall and 1-1 in the Red River Athletic Conference. St. Thomas improves to 7-7 overall and 4-2 in conference. Paul Quinn, a member of the Red River but ineligible for the post season, drops to 0-10 overall. Read full story online.
