It’s Fiesta time at OLLU with ‘Best of the West’ this weekend

medal-unveiling-botw_2014_01OLLU’s third annual “Best of the West” Fiesta® event will take place Saturday from 4-11 p.m. The family-friendly event will celebrate the Westside of San Antonio and showcase area restaurants, artists and musicians.

This year’s event will feature entertainment from headline band Ready Revolution, as well as Ernie Gariby and Cats Don’t Sleep, Grupo Ondo and Colao.

Children will be able to enjoy a specialized area that will offer a safe environment featuring carnival games, face painting, a rock-climbing wall, arts and crafts, a live animal interaction booth and other activities.

Restaurants featured during “Best of the West” include: Gallo’s Pizza and Subs; Lisa’s Mexican Restaurant; Bayseas Seafood; Papa’s Burgers; Clara’s Gorditas, Sausage Wraps and Funnel Cakes; and Pure Texan BBQ Co.

Tickets are $5 for adults and free for children 12 and younger. OLLU students get in free with their OLLU ID.

Parking lot closure and building access for “Best of the West”

To accommodate “Best of the West,” campus parking lots on the east side of campus will begin closing Wednesday evening at 6 p.m. The schedule of lot closures is as follows:

  • Lot I (behind the Library) will close Wednesday at 8 a.m. and will reopen on Monday.
  • Lot J (next to Jersig Center) will close at the end of business on Thursday and will reopen on Sunday.

The Library will be open Saturday from 11 a.m.-4 p.m.. The 24-hour study lab will remain open all day, and students will need their IDs to access the building.

The majority of the campus will be on lock down on Saturday. Everyone will need their IDs for access to any buildings that day. Weekend College students who do not have an ID with swiping capabilities may use the front entrance to Main Building to get to their classes. All other entrances will be locked.

OLLU community invited to participate in ‘Helping our Community Heal Conference’

The Criminal Justice department is teaming up with the Rape Crisis Center to present the “Helping our Community Heal Conference” tomorrow from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. The Conference will feature presentations from the San Antonio Zen Center, Children’s Hospital of San Antonio, Methodist Specialty and Transplant Hospital, Texas Association Against Sexual Assault, San Antonio Police Department-SVU, and many others. Topics will include Rape Culture on College Campuses, Rape in San Antonio, Human Trafficking and Art Therapy.

The information is geared toward mental health professionals, educators, and those who serve victims across the community.

The cost is $70 to attend. Participants will earn 6 CEUs.

OLLU’s annual Literary Festival kicks off next week

LitFest Banner OLLU’s annual Literary Festival will run April 9-12. The festival includes a series of literary events presented by renowned poets, scholars and authors. This year’s festival, “Rebirth and Renacimiento,” will explore the themes of rebirth and renewal through various events over the course of several days.

Headline presenters for this year will include poet Laurie Ann Guerrero, Anel Flores, Ito Romo and OLLU’s very own Nan Cuba.

Students invited to learn more about healthy dating at ‘Can I Kiss You?’

OLLU students are invited to attend “Can I Kiss You?” today from 7-8 p.m. in Thiry Auditorium. The event, sponsored by the Criminal Justice department and the Rape Crisis Center, will feature the founder of the Date Safe Project, Mike Domitrez. The presentation will explore the topics of consent, bystander intervention, healthy dating and sexual assault awareness, as Domitrez takes the audience on a journey from hilarious laughter to hard-hitting questions. He will then provide the answers each student can use in his or her own life.

Health and Wellness Fair and Mobile Mammogram Unit Wednesday

The Human Resources Department is sponsoring the sixth annual Health and Wellness Fair Wednesday from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. in Chapel Auditorium. During the fair, participants will be able to receive screenings for stroke, heart disease, blood pressure, hearing and other health conditions. Attendees can also get information on fitness, wellness, nutrition, financial health and work/life balance. The fair is open to the OLLU community.

OLLU faculty members have a busy spring semester

During the spring semester, faculty members have been busy presenting at conferences and winning awards. The following are a few of the most recent accomplishments by OLLU faculty:

  • Michaela Cole, PhD, associate professor of Education, is being named the Norma L. Ziegler Education Professional of the Year. She was nominated for the service that she does with the early childhood education students in the community.
  • Hamid Khan, EdD, PE, professor of Management, presented a paper titled, “Teaching Effectiveness with Student Engagement, using Predictive Value of Case Based Reaction, Learning, Behavior, and Result,” at the Academy of Business Research (ABR) Conference. The peer-reviewed paper has been accepted for publication in the May Volume of the Academy of Business Research Journal (ABRJ).
  • Wanda Sparks, RN, PhD, assistant professor of Nursing and Anthony Miles, PhD, visiting professor of Management, won the award for “Best Research/Topic in Marketing at the Academy of Business Research (ABR) Conference. Their topic was, “Social Media and Consumer Behavior: A Marketing Study on RateMyProfessors.com and its Influence on Consumer Behavior.”

Track and field participates in Trinity Relays

T&F-2The track and field team participated in the Tiger Relays held at the Trinity University Track and Field Stadium last Friday. Bonnie Perez finished in 15th place in the Women 400 Meter Dash with a time of 1:05.75. Laura Echeverria came in 17th place with a time of 1:06.14. Perez finished in 12th place in the Women 800 Meter Run with a time of 2:33.33. The team will travel to San Marcos on Saturday to participate in the Texas State Invite. Softball wins two of four against Southwest

SB3-31-2The softball team hoped to pull into first place after defeating the University of the Southwest 1-0 in both games on Saturday. But on Sunday, the Mustangs came back to best the Saints 4-3 and 5-3 to maintain their first-place standing in the Red River Athletic Conference. The Saints are now 19-7-1 overall and 6-2 in the conference, while Southwest improves to 19-11 overall and 9-3 in conference – one full game ahead of OLLU. The Saints will play their next games in Sherman, Texas, in a round robin hosted by Austin College. On April 4, the Saints will play Austin College at 3 p.m. and Hillsdale College at 7 p.m. On April 5, the Saints will play Hillsdale College at noon and Austin College at 2 p.m. Go online for full article.
