Men’s basketball ends season with a loss to St. Thomas in conference semifinals

Marcus3-10-14The men’s basketball team ended its season last Friday after losing the semifinals match to the University of St. Thomas 64-74. The Saints finish at 21-11 overall and 14-4 in the Red River Athletic Conference, while St. Thomas advances to the conference tournament finals with a record of 20-9 overall and 14-4 in conference. Xavier Roberson (SR, Houston, Texas), the nation’s leading scorer, had one point in the first half and finished with 18 including 7-of-16 field goals, 3-of-9 3-pointers and 1-of-2 free throws. Wood-Dvorak added 17 points including 6-of-13 from the field goal and 5-of-10 from 3-point range. The only other Saint to score in double digits was Mike Willie (SR, Austin, Texas), who finished with 13 points. Overall, the Saints shot 35 percent from the field, 31 percent from 3-point range and 61 percent from the free-throw line. Roberson and Wood-Dvorak were selected to the All-Tournament Team. OLLU women’s basketball loses to Huston-Tillotson in semifinals round

Lauren3-10-14The women’s basketball team lost in the semifinals round of the Red River Athletic Conference to Huston-Tillotson University 58-70. The Saints will begin preparing for the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) DI Women’s Basketball National Championship Tournament that takes place March 19-25 in Frankfort, Ky. Because the Saints were the No. 1 seed in the regular season, they earned an automatic bid to the tournament. Head Coach Christopher Minner said, “We have to give credit to HTU for playing a great game. They played with high energy and passion. We just didn’t play with great effort. Hopefully we will play better in Kentucky.” The NAIA will announce the 32-team pairings for the NAIA Division I women’s tournament on March 12 at 7 p.m. The video will appear on NAIA.org roughly five minutes prior to the start of the show. Women’s basketball captures conference title and automatic berth to nationals after win over LSU-Shreveport

WBB3-3-14The women’s basketball team captured the Red River Athletic Conference regular season title and an automatic berth to the NAIA DI Women’s Basketball National Tournament in Kentucky after defeating LSU-Shreveport 85-69 Saturday evening at Mabee Gymnasium. The win ends the Saints’ regular season with a 16-2 Red River Athletic Conference record and 26-3 overall, while the Lady Pilots drop to 9-9 in conference and 17-12 overall. The Saints will be the No. 1 seed and Wiley College (16-2/27-3) the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament semifinals. No. 3 seed Langston University (13-5/18-11) will host No. 6 seed LSU-Shreveport on March 4, while No. 4 Jarvis Christian College (10-8/14-8) will host No. 5 Huston-Tillotson University (10-8/12-14) for the quarterfinals. The Saints will play the lowest remaining seed at 1 p.m. on March 7. Wiley will play the highest remaining seed at 6 p.m. on March 7. On March 8, the championship game will take place at 2 p.m. Both days’ games will be held at East Texas Baptist University in Marshall, Texas. All Saints games will be live streamed. After the game, team members took turns tearing down the net, with input from Coach Minner, Assistant Coach Valerie Huizar, Assistant Coach Randy Gibbons and OLLU President Sister Jane Ann Slater.  In addition, prior to the men’s game, seniors Ornela Bacchini (SR, Buenos Aires, Argentina), Sam Offord (SR, Kaufman, Texas), Sequestiny O’Neal (SR, Midland, Texas) and Chelsea Solis were honored. FAFSA Days offer assistance in completing important financial aid documents

The OLLU Financial Aid Office is hosting FAFSA Days on Saturday, March 8 and Saturday, April 26, from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. in Main Building, Room 209. During FAFSA Days, staff from the Financial Aid Office will be helping students complete their 2014-2015 Federal Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Students need to bring their 2013 tax information for themselves and their parent(s) as well as their Federal Student Aid PIN number.

Find the perfect job or internship during the spring 2014 career and internship fair

Students are invited to network with recruiters during the spring 2014 career and internship fair Tuesday from 3-6 p.m. in Providence Hall, West Social Room. Representatives from more than 30 employers will be in attendance at the fair. After the fair, there will be an employer/student mixer from 6-7 p.m. in Providence Hall, Blue Room, where complimentary food and drinks will be provided.

Attendees should dress professionally and bring copies of their résumé.

Jack Hank named 2013-2014 NAIA/Under Armour Athletic Director of the Year

2013JackHank1Jack Hank has been recognized as the 2013-2014 National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics/Other Four-Year Institutions Under Armour Athletic Director of the Year. Hank will be recognized during the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) 49th Annual Convention at the World Center Marriott Resort in Orlando, Fla. on June 11. The award will be presented during the James J. Corbett Awards Luncheon. The Under Armour AD of the Year Award program was created to honor intercollegiate directors of athletics for their commitment and administrative excellence within a campus and/or college community environment. The award spans seven divisions (NCAA FBS, FCS, Division I-AAA, II, III, NAIA/Other Four-Year Institutions and Junior/Community Colleges) and annually honors 28 athletics directors (four from each division).  Read full story online.
