Luis Flores corralled the Red River Athletic Conference Men’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week award for Sept. 9-15. Flores, a senior defender from Brownsville, Texas, spearheaded an effort that led to a pair of shutouts for the Saints last week. His leadership helped OLLU limit Concordia University (Texas) to only two shots on goal and prevented Howard Payne University (Texas) from taking a shot in a 2-0 difference. Teegan Luckemeyer stood out as the Red River Athletic Conference Women’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week for Sept. 9-15, while her teammate, Victoria Vazquez, claimed the RRAC Defensive Player of the Week honor for the same dates. This is Vazquez’ third consecutive recognition as the conference’s Player of the Week. On Aug. 26-Sept. 1 and Sept. 2-9, she was named “Offensive Player of the Week.” Luckemeyer, a sophomore forward from New Braunfels, Texas, produced a pair of goals and one assist in a 2-0 week for the Saints. She posted a goal and an assist in a 3-2 victory over Concordia University (Texas) then booted in a goal to tag Northwood University with its first loss by a 4-3 score. The Our Lady of the Lake University community is encouraged to attend the annual Fall Pep Rally that will take place on Tuesday in the Mall Area. Jay Tope, the Voice of the Saints, will emcee the event, which will feature a performance from the FYC Mentors. All coaches and teams will be introduced. The Office of Marketing and Communications will provide free hot dogs and Saints gear while they last.
The women’s soccer team played a tough match against Northwood University Sunday afternoon. The Saints came out on top to win 4-3 to improve their record to 5-1-1 while Northwood, an NAIA school in the Sooner Conference, suffers its first loss of the season and is now 3-1. The Saints have faced Northwood eight times since 2008. During the first year, the Saints lost 2-4 and 1-2. In 2009, the Saints won one and lost two. In 2011, the Saints split a win and a loss and last season, the Saints lost to Northwood, which this year moved from the Red River to the Sooner Athletic Conference. Read more online.
The men’s soccer team beat Howard Payne University (HPU) 2-0 at the OLLU Soccer Field on Saturday afternoon. The win improves the Saints’ record to 5-0 on the season, while Howard Payne – an NCAA Division III team – drops to 1-4. The game ended with the Saints outshooting the Yellow Jackets 36-2. Elias Cortes broke a Saints all-time single game record of shots after he finished with 11. Robert Alexe previously held the record with nine total in a game against Bacone in 2011. The volleyball team opened its conference schedule on Friday in Tyler against Texas College. The Saints beat the Steers in three sets, 25-20, 25-15 and 25-13. The team then traveled to Austin on Saturday to play a tri-match with Huston-Tillotson University and Dallas Christian College. The Saints won all six sets against the two teams. Read more online.
Victoria Vazquez earned a share of the Red River Athletic Conference Women’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week award for Sept. 2-9. Vazquez, a senior midfielder from Helotes, Texas, compiled two goals and three assists in a 1-0-1 week for the Lady Saints. She scored one goal to help OLLU claim a 2-2 tie against St. Mary’s University before playing a part in four goals in an 8-1 trouncing of Schreiner University (Texas). Robert Alexe was recognized with the Red River Athletic Conference Men’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week award for Sept. 2-8. Alexe, a junior forward from Chicago, booted in a pair of goals and assisted on another as the Saints won their only game of the week, 7-1, over Schreiner University. Alexe got the scoring started with a goal and assisted on OLLU’s second goal to establish a 2-1 lead. The Saints extended the lead from there and climbed to 3-0 on the season. Throughout the year, OLLU will host a series of fundraising events to benefit the OLLU men’s and women’s athletics teams. The first event of the year is the OLLU Benefit Bash for Men’s Basketball and introducing new Men’s Golf Coach Alan Baxter on Wednesday, Sept. 11. Special guests include President Jane Ann Slater and Board Chair Roy Terracina.

The OLLU Cross-Country Teams have partnered with Lids Team Sports to sell OLLU gear to the public. Funds raised will support the teams in their travels throughout Texas and various states throughout the country. Cross-Country Coach Stephen Sherman said, “The selections we are offering are attractive and each honors OLLU’s brand and spirit. OLLU women’s soccer team tied the Rattlers from St. Mary’s University 2-2 at the OLLU Soccer Field Thursday night. The Saints came back from being down 0-2 and junior forward Stephanie Diaz tied the game with only eight seconds left in the second half. After a 45-minute lightning delay and two overtime periods, the scored remained at 2-2. Read more online.
Freshman Amaris Tavares and her hat trick led the team to an 8-1 win over NCAA Division III Schreiner University on Friday afternoon. The win moves the Saints to 3-0-1, while Schreiner drops to 0-3. Read more online.
In the last of three games in the week, the Saints faced NCAA DI University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) for the first time ever. Despite a tough battle, the Saints fell 1-0 to the Cardinals. OLLU is now 3-1-1 on the season.
