OLLU women’s cross-country places seventh in Bill Libby meet

OLLU women’s cross-country ran their first meet of the season as a team when they competed in the 2013 Bill Libby Invitational, hosted by McMurry University, at Nelson Park in Abilene, Texas. The team finished in seventh place out of eight teams with a total time of 1:48:55.39. Head Coach Stephen Sherman had high expectations on his team after last year’s meet in Abilene. “I was disappointed we didn’t run as a team as well as we did here last year, but it is certainly nothing that we are worried about.” Read more online.

OLLU men’s cross-country ran its second meet of the season when three runners participated in the 2013 Bill Libby Invitational hosted by McMurry University at Nelson Park in Abilene, Texas. Freshman Jonathan Yanez (pictured at right) was the first Saints runner and 20th overall to complete the 8000m around Nelson Park with the time 28:09.44. Read more online.

OLLU men’s soccer routs Schreiner to a 7-1 win

Robert Alexe and Giovanni Sierra each scored two goals and led the OLLU men’s soccer team to a 7-1 win over Schreiner University from Kerrville, Texas. The win keeps the Saints undefeated with a 3-0 record, while NCAA Division III Schreiner drops to 0-2-1. The Saints outshot the Mountaineers 27-7. Alexe led OLLU with four shots, three on goal. Sierra and Jonathan Garay also had four shots each. Read more online.

Yanez and O’Donnell named conference ‘Runners of the Week’

Jonathan Yanez raced to the Red River Athletic Conference Men’s Cross Country Runner of the Week award for Aug. 26-Sept. 1, and OLLU’s Ceara O’Donnell was named the RRAC Women’s Runner of the Week for the same dates. Yanez, a freshman from Bay City, Texas, broke the school record in a 6,000-meter race in his first OLLU meet, the Alamo City Opener. He finished fifth in a field of 20 runners with a time of 20:11. O’Donnell, a freshman from Corpus Christi, Texas, was also competing in her first collegiate race and finished 10th in the women’s event at the Alamo City Opener. She ran the 4,000 meters in a time of 15:54 against a field of 22 runners from NCAA schools. Read more online.

OLLU volleyball wins one of four matches in Fort Worth tournament

The OLLU volleyball team participated in the Texas Wesleyan University Hughes Classic in Fort Worth over the weekend and won one of four matches. The Saints are now 3-3 on the season. In the first match of the tournament, the Saints faced NAIA’s Rocky Mountain Collage from Montana and lost in three straight sets, 15-25, 16-25 and 16-25. In the second match, the Saints were matched up against NAIA’s Lewis-Clark State College from Idaho. OLLU lost again in three straight sets, 25-27, 19-25 and 21-25. The Saints faced Briar Cliff University, also an NAIA school, in the third match of the tournament. The Saints lost 18-25, 12-25 and 20-25. In the final match of the tournament, the Saints met Texas Wesleyan University and won three of five sets, 25-22, 14-25, 25-21, 22-25 and 15-8. Read more online.

OLLU volleyball beats Loyola 3-1

VolleyballvsLoyola2OLLU defeated Loyola University three sets to one Monday afternoon in Mabee Gymnasium. The win moves the Saints to 2-0 on the season, while Loyola drops to 2-7. OLLU has played Loyola only once in the past, during the Saints’ inaugural season in 2007 when they lost 3-2.

Assistant Coach Sarah Lindsay said, “We did a really good job. We had a slump in the third set because we had a lot of hitting and setting errors, but the women came back in the fourth set, cutting down on the errors, and they were able to pull off the win. The women seem to be adapting well to each other and we are happy with their progress.” Read more online.

The OLLU men’s soccer team defeated the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma (USAO) in overtime Sunday afternoon. The Saints’ 2-1 win moves them to 2-0 on the season, while USAO suffered its first loss and is now 1-1.

Following the game, Assistant Coach Arthur Salazar said, “I thought the men did better today compared to yesterday. They played with technique rather than physicality. They made some changes overall from the individual player to the group mentality. They kept their composure and played according to strength. USAO is a very good team, so this was a good win for us.” Read more online.

In two consecutive games, OLLU women’s soccer team had to come from behind to win the game. Friday afternoon, the Saints faced the Drovers from the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma (USAO), and after trailing 1-0 in the first half, OLLU came back to win 3-2 in overtime.

OLLU is now 2-0, while USAO drops to 0-2.

The Saints had many opportunities to score in the beginning of the game, but the women could not find the inside of the net. After 18 minutes had passed, the Lady Drovers drove the ball in to record an unassisted goal by Jade Ovendale. Read more online.

The OLLU women’s cross-country team ran its first meet for the season, and one runner set an OLLU record during the Alamo City Opener held at the Olmos Basin Park and hosted by Trinity University.

Freshman Ceara O’Donnell was the first from the women’s team to cross the finish line with the time 15:54.22. In her first meet ever for the Saints, O’Donnell erased the old 4000m school record from Aug. 31, 2012. Then freshman Marianna Hurtado set that record after she ran the four kilometers in 17 minutes and 11 seconds. O’Donnell also became a member of the OLLU Saints Halo Club for runners, who complete a 4K under 16 minutes. Read more online.
