Our Lady of the Lake University will present the “2020 Veterans Day Observation Ceremony” on Wednesday, Nov. 11, from 12:30-1:45 p.m., in the Mall Area. The featured speaker will be Col. Jennie R. Johnson.

OLLU played a strong and historic role in the 2020 election. For the first time, OLLU served as a polling site. According to Bexar County Elections data, the Library Community Room drew 5,853 early voters, including San Antonio mayor Ron Nirenberg. 

Voting at OLLU also attracted significant media coverage with stories published or broadcast in the San Antonio Express-News, News 4 WOAI-TV, the San Antonio Current and Telemundo 60 San Antonio.

A 102-year-old woman, Soledad Rodriguez, cast her ballot at OLLU. A number of students and citizens in their 70s voted for the first time at the Library Community Room.

Voter outreach efforts on campus yielded 36 people who registered to vote. Forty-seven students and faculty members served as poll workers. 

In recent years, the President’s Council has approved additional holidays for employees at the request of the Staff Advisory Council (SAC). SAC submitted a proposal for additional university holidays this academic year. The following additional holiday dates for the fall semester have been approved by the President’s Council.

*         Wednesday, Nov. 25, 2020 (Wednesday before Thanksgiving)

*         Wednesday, Dec. 23, 2020 (extension of Christmas break)

The university will be closed on the above dates. Additional holidays were requested for the spring semester. A decision on those dates will be made in January.

Students, faculty and staff are invited to “Celebrate National 1st Gen Day” at 12:30 p.m. today in the Mall Area. 

Event host “OLLU 1st Gen” will provide craft supplies for participants to create a project representative of their experience as a first generation college student. Student participants will be asked to create a message in text, image or video on Instagram and tag @ollu1stgen to share their messages with other first generation students.

Faculty and staff are asked to create an image or video on their Instagram page with words of encouragement for a first generation college student. Or they can tell one thing they wish they would have known as a first generation college student.

Faculty and staff are also asked to tag @Ollu1stGen or send an email to @firstgenerationstudent so OLLU can share on their behalf. 

Sunday, Nov. 8, marked the 55th anniversary of the signing of the 1965 Higher Education Act (HEA), which has helped millions of first-generation, low-income/under-resourced students persist to degree completion.

The McNair Scholars program and Student Leadership and Development are strong supporters of first generation students and will participate in today’s event.

“Our goal is to increase visibility of first generation students overall,” said Jessica Quintero, PhD, Instructional Designer for the Center for Teaching Excellence. “We will be hosting a small event on campus, a virtual campaign via Instagram, and are encouraging faculty, staff, and students to change their background for any virtual class and meeting to one of the attached for the week of the 8th.” 

The data collected will be used to understand the present climate at OLLU and to inform current and future decisions about supporting a diverse, inclusive and vibrant campus community.
